Today, we end on the Parable of the Pharisee and Tax Collector, found in Luke 18:9-14. This parable is a beautiful, yet shocking, picture of the upside-down nature of the kingdom of God. It confronts us with the all-important question, “How do I know where I stand with God?” and is a fitting conclusion to our series.

The Hidden Treasure and a Priceless Pearl

Today, we begin in Matthew 13:44-46 with the parable of the hidden treasure and, its pair, the pearl of great price. We start here because these parables, in a way, encompass all the others. Here Jesus illustrates the unrivaled worth of God’s Kingdom and invites us to consider: What is my greatest treasure? And, more importantly, am I living for the greatest treasure?

Our response to him is dependent on the condition of the soil of our heart—and only one soil produces a harvest that will last.
