The Importance of Saving
May 25, 2018
Steve and Rob reference the following scripture passages in today’s program:
• Proverbs 21:17 - Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich.
• Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
• Proverbs 25:28 - A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
There are a lot of reasons people can’t save money. Maybe they’re in debt; maybe there isn’t enough income, maybe they don’t have good money-management skills or perhaps, spending has become a compulsion. Nonetheless, saving if vital for successful financial living.
Today, Rob and Steve discuss reasons why to save and how to save.
• The Bible encourages us to save.
• Even a small amount adds up over time.
• A good guideline is putting aside 10% from each paycheck and save in a separate account.
• Saving is another way of worshipping God.
• Key to saving is self-control. Without self-control, finances will dictate decisions.
Next, Rob and Steve answer questions at (800) 525-7000 and http://questions@moneywise.org about the following:
• Aaron from Grand Junction, Colorado wonders about the differences between a Roth IRA and a 403(b) fund.
• Linda from Cleveland, Ohio wonders about current resources available for people buying their first-time home.
• Derrick from St. Louis, Missouri wonders if he should use a balance transfer to consolidate some of his debt .
