This paragraph brings chapters 1–4 to a fitting conclusion and at the same time prepares us for what is coming next. As a Spiritual Father, Paul is willing to do 3 things for the wellbeing of this church. For everything that has been taught thus far to be seen through the lens of Paul as their spiritual father. 1. Paul as a Spiritual Father, Cares Enough to Correct 2. Paul as a Spiritual Father, Sets the Example to Imitate 3. Paul as a Spiritual Father, Is Willing to Discipline when Necessary
The previous paragraph concluded with the metaphor of the church as God’s building, and the building metaphor is expanded in this portion of Scripture. Leaders and all church members should listen to the three exhortations that Paul gives. 1. Build Carefully 2. Guard Diligently 3. Act Foolishly
