New Year's Eve Worship

Many of us want 2018 to be different. We truly desire the new year to be better than the one drawing to a close. Some hardships have been products of our own choices, others have come as a result of the choices of others. One thing is for sure, the Lord God is aware and He knows our heart. He is in ultimate control of all things and remembers those who fear Him—those determined to honor His name regardless of their circumstances (Malachi 3:16). What are you resolved to do? Is one of your resolutions to honor God, no matter what happens around you? Jesus said, “God blesses those whose hearts are pure; for they will see God” (Matthew 5:8).

During the time of the prophet, Zephaniah, Judah had so polluted itself with violence, injustice, idolatry, and religious pretense, that God’s righteous judgment was set in motion. Like a floodgate about to break, the wrath of God’s judgment was about to burst upon Jerusalem and all of Judah. Zephaniah spoke at a time when the leaders and those of influence had led the people into horrific pagan worship practices, mistreatment of the poor, civil degradation, and economic greed while shaking a defiant fist to God’s holy ways.

“Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, He has spoken to us through His Son… The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and He sustains everything by the mighty power of His command. When He had cleansed us from our sins, He sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven” (Hebrews1:1-2a,3). The writer of Hebrews goes on to say: “And when He brought His supreme Son into the world, God said, ‘Let all of God’s angels worship Him’” (Hebrews 1:6).

As we approach the celebration of the coming of God’s Christ into the world, we are reminded that all things serve God’s purposes. And there are events on Heaven’s calendar that no man, world power, or force of darkness can thwart. God is sovereign and in control. For example, Caesar Augustus called for the census (Luke 2:1) – his idea, or God’s? Back up some 400 years, Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar rises to conquer the known world, exiling the people of Judah – his idea, or God’s? Nebuchadnezzar would rule for a time, then his son and his son (Jeremiah 27:6-7) before falling to the Medes and Persians. Seventy years later, Cyrus of Persia would rise to power and send the Judean exiles back to their home – his idea, or God’s?
Supernatural Encounter with God

We are surrounded by the supernatural all the time. But we don’t see it because we are not looking for God. God is the author of all that is seen and unseen, and even now, He is holding all creation together—giving life. God speaks and things happen. God is and always has been near and personal to those who would seek Him and honor Him with their obedience and attention. When the time was right God came into this world. To the virgin girl, the angel said: “Don’t be afraid Mary for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus” (Luke 1:30-31), and to her betrothed: “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20b-21).
