5. Love Like Jesus (1 John 3:11-24)

This is Love

While our culture strongly derides hate, we reward it with ratings on cable news, demonstrate it in our social media conversations, and often live it out in our daily lives. It thrives in almost every corner of society, even within church culture.

But in 1 John, the apostle writes in stark language that hate and following Jesus are completely opposed to one another. He encourages us to not only speak love to one another, but sacrificially demonstrate it in the way we act.

8. Know Jesus Jesus is the True God and Eternal Life

Love. It’s a loaded word. For many, it carries plenty of baggage. It’s portrayed in the media as something thrilling but fragile, desired but dangerous, idealized but broken. It’s a tainted view that, unfortunately, matches nearly everyone’s experience with it. In 1 John, we see a very different picture of love. It’s painted as something that’s dependable, unbreakable, and unconditional. It’s the kind of love freely poured out on us by God. It’s not a source of fear; it’s the answer to it. It’s not fragile; it’s reliable. It’s deeper than romance or friendship. It’s a promise interwoven into the very character of God.

A college professor once told his students, "Don't tell me what you believe. Show me." What we do often proves who we are. So what are the hallmark traits of someone who truly follows Jesus? What are those things that naturally flow out of a true believer? John tackles this question head-on in 1 John 2, showing that there's one trait in particular that is evident in those who truly know and walk with him.
