Jesus the Humble Servant: A Study in Mark (Part 1)

Beginning of the Gospel

Today we embark on a new series in the book of Mark, titled "Jesus, The Humble Servant". Thought by many to be the earliest of the gospel accounts, the Book of Mark is also the shortest of the four gospels. But, that certainly is not an indication of its relevance to us today. As we're about to see, its sixteen chapters are packed with wisdom and guidance for living out a faith-filled life.

He Touched Me

Jesus, The Great Physician

One of the most aggravating things going on in the year 2012 is the world's attempts to redefine who Jesus is, and to redefine why He came to the earth. Today's scripture text is a perfect example of this. The world says Jesus was a peace loving guy, who just wanted everyone to love and accept each other. On the contrary, Jesus came to point out our sin, lead us to repent of those sins, and to ultimately die on the cross for our sins.

Getting It Right in the Heart

Countless people today are experiencing hurt. Maybe you're so deeply in debt you feel as though there's no way out. Others have a broken heart due to a painful relationship, or failing health. The man we're going to meet today on Bridging the Gap had a withered hand, but after he stepped out in faith, he experience a wonderful touch from God. Maybe you're in desperate need of the same, and if so, we urge you to stay with us.

Getting It Right About Jesus

If Jesus would arrive on the scene in 2012, He would encounter many of the same problems He did over two-thousand years ago. He would no doubt be considered intolerant, He would certainly go against the grain of the status quo. By today's definition, Jesus would truly be called a radical.

In the United States, close to 75% of the adult population describes themselves as "Christian," according to one pollster. But are they really? Many people, unfortunately, are Christian in name only. It was true in Jesus' day as well, and that's why He shared the parable of the Sower. That will be our topic of discussion once again today as we look at Mark chapter four. Here Jesus describes four kinds of soil, and we'd do well to see which best describes our heart this day to see whether or not we are who we think!

Take Heed How You Hear

Think for a moment about responsibility. There are people with great responsibility on their shoulders every day, like the President. And there are those who have very little responsibility. For a Christian, responsibility is a big thing - a very big thing. Many people shy away from crowds, but Jesus saw them through loving eyes, and was quick to show His disciples how to be compassionate and caring. We'll be turning our attention to Mark chapter six today, where we see the heart of God and some valuable principles that can help us as we set out to serve God. Approximately fifteen to twenty five thousand hungry people, and just five loaves and two fish. The disciples of Christ saw this as a problem, but Jesus saw it as an opportunity.

An Issue of the Heart

Many of you know that Baseball great Joe Dimaggio was married for a time to Marilyn Monroe. After her death, Joltin' Joe had a half-dozen red roses delivered 3 times a week to her crypt for 20 years. That's a nice tradition. but not all traditions are good. Today on Bridging the Gap we'll meet a few individuals who clung to their traditions, in lieu of Christ, and that spells disaster as we're about to discover.
