In our present passage, he speaks on another matter that seeks to run interference on our relationship with God (& tries to stand right in the way of others coming into a relationship with God) & that is the danger & deception of what we might call, “false religion” as opposed to a true relationship with the Lord.

The basic warning John was sounding in the previous passage? The Dangers & Deceptions of living in the last hour. He spoke not only of the Antichrist (with a capital “A”) who is coming (the literal, physical deceiver, that man of sin who will serve as a political, economic & spiritual figurehead who will lead the world in rebellion against God & try in vain to make war with Jesus.).

Comparing & contrasting. That’s what John’s been up to in this, our present passage. He’s been reasoning with us from both the positive & the negative position & he’s trying to get us to understand that “the proof is in the practice” of a person’s life. How can you know if you’re truly a child of God. How can you detect or discern if someone else is truly a child of God. The proof isn’t in what I say (I can say any number of things that sound affirming to the Christian position). The proof really lies in what my life characteristically displays.

Sometimes, to understand what something is, we need to understand what it isn’t. John has been speaking to us of the non-negotiable, absolutely essential element of love for the body of Christ that will be in the child of God. In fact, he went as far as to say that “love for the brethren” was one way in which we could detect (or discern) a child of God from a child of the devil. That being said, if love is a non-negotiable, essential imperative, then we better have a crystal-clear understanding as to exactly what love is…
1 John 4:17-21 “Perfect Love”

Ladies & Gentlemen; as sure as I stand before you today, J.C. is coming again… It’s a truth that John affirms over & over throughout this little letter. Back in Vs 28 of Ch 2 he said, “And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.” I'll say it again, the day is coming when J.C. will return to this earth, & He won’t be coming as the Lamb of God to take away the sins of the world. He’ll be coming as the Lion of the tribe of Judah & His agenda will be too clean house, to make right all that is wrong & to judge the world in righteousness.
