Talking To God

The Power & Purpose Of Prayer

01 - Why & To Whom To Pray?

September 2, 2018 • Pastor Ronald H. Gann

What happens to a person who talks with God regularly in prayer? Among other things, they are likely to develop a communicative relationship with Him that fosters change—either to our circumstances or in us (and sometimes both). The discipline of prayer goes beyond intercession and supplication. It includes power and purpose. God not only sovereignly ordains the ends, but He also ordains the means to those ends, and often times He uses the prayers of His people to bring His sovereign will to pass. In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann examines the ways and means of talking to God, and the power behind it.

02 - When & Where To Pray?

The Bible gives various answers as to WHY and to WHOM Christians are to pray. Among them, we read, is that we pray to God, and to God alone (not to deceased super-saints or dearly departed relatives) because prayer changes us, commends God, and is commanded of us by God. But that begs the follow-up question: WHEN and WHERE, exactly, should Christians pray? Stated differently, is there a prescribed time of the day or a specific location for talking to God where He is especially attentive to our supplications? In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann examines the ways and means of talking to God, and the power behind it.

03 - How & What To Pray?

For those who are new to their faith, prayer can seem daunting and intimidating. "How do I talk to God?" some might ask, or "What am I’m supposed to say? And how am I to say it?" Even for the seasoned believer, prayer can be challenging at times. It can grow stale over time, feel useless at moments, become frustrating on occasion, or just seem to lose its power. So HOW should Christians pray exactly? And WHAT specifically does God expect to hear from us when we do pray? In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann examines the ways and means of talking to God, and the power behind it.

04 - Sovereignty vs. Supplication

September 30, 2018 • Pastor Ronald H. Gann

When it comes to reconciling God’s sovereignty with man’s prayers, the debate is longstanding. Some argue that, because God has predetermined all things as they are, prayer is ultimately pointless. Others argue that, because God is supposedly limited in His knowledge, prayer is persuasive (i.e. God will respond in ways that He otherwise might not). So how does God’s sovereignty and immutability relate to man’s prayers and supplication? Can the two coexist? In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann examines the ways and means of talking to God, and the power behind it.
