The Names Of God

What's In A Name?

01 - Jehovah: Yahweh & Adonai

April 23, 2017 • Pastor Ronald H. Gann

The prominence of a name has long been immortalized in prose, poetry, and religious ceremony. Almost everyone has one or is called by one. But is a name simply an outward identification mark or does it reveal something inward about the person named? Biblically, names carry meaning because they describe the qualities and characteristics of the person who bears the name. But what about the names of God? What do they reveal about His nature, character, attributes, and attitudes—indeed—His very being? To begin with, He is JEHOVAH YAWEH—the eternal Creator and Great I AM as well as JEHOVAH ADONAI—the sovereign Lord, Master, Ruler, and Owner of all. In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann dissects the more popular names of God in the Old Testament, and shows how God's nature and attributes are defined by the titles ascribed to Him.

Because of the depth of God’s character, He has various names that reflect the many ways He relates to us today. He has a name for every situation we find ourselves in. We need to learn these names because the better we know them the better we will know His character in our time of need. When we feel forgotten by God, He is still JEHOVAH EL ROI—the God who sees. When we fill ill-equipped, He is JEHOVAH EL SHADDAI —the God who is sufficient. In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann dissects the more popular names of God in the Old Testament, and shows how God's nature and attributes are defined by the titles ascribed to Him.

03 - Jehovah: Nissi & Rapha

If God’s name is as wonderful as it is incomprehensible (Judges 13); if it is as inescapable as it is powerful (Genesis 16), then it is as holy as it is sacred (2 Samuel 6; Leviticus 10). In fact, so holy is God’s name, whether referred to as YAHWEH or ADONAI, or the all-encompassing title of JEHOVAH, that God will not and cannot tolerate it being profaned. And two such names that God holds sacred are JEHOVAH NISSI—the God who is our victory banner and JEHOVAH RAPHA—the God who is our Healer. In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann dissects the more popular names of God in the Old Testament, and shows how God's nature and attributes are defined by the titles ascribed to Him.

04 - Jehovah: Jireh & Tsidkenu

"And those who know your name," says Psalm 9:10, "put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you." To know God is to know His name. And to know His name is to know who He is. All who know Him by name put their trust in Him, and all who put their trust in Him will not be forsaken by Him. Among other titles, His name is JEHOVAH JIREH—the God who provides. He is JEHOVAH TSIDKENU-the God who is our righteousness In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann dissects the more popular names of God in the Old Testament, and shows how God's nature and attributes are defined by the titles ascribed to Him.

05 - Jehovah: Mekoddishkem & Raah

When the proverbial storms of life are raging, heavy rain is pouring, waves are rocking, the trees are whistling, and the sea of our lives are crashing all around us, we’re told by Solomon to run to God, where we can find refuge in the power of His name (Prov. 18:10). And what is that name? He is JEHOVAH MEKODDISHKEM—the God who sanctifies. He is JEHOVAH RAAH—the God who is our Shepherd. In this sermon series, Pastor Ronald H. Gann dissects the more popular names of God in the Old Testament, and shows how God's nature and attributes are defined by the titles ascribed to Him.
