Legacy

What is the true measure of a life?

07 Legacy - Guard Your Heart

October 16, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 2 Samuel 11

We live in an age where sexual sin is rapidly being erased as a category of sin. It's in the air that we breathe and it's wreaking havoc on lives, marriages, and ministries. This week we will look at David's sin with Bathsheba. It's a dark chapter in his life that was the product of an unguarded and unbound heart that led to sin compounding on sin to devastating effect. This is obviously a sensitive topic for younger attenders. We will keep our consideration at a PG level but parents of younger children may want to watch this first and decide if they want their younger children to view the message. If so, a family discussion about the message after it has finished is advised.

11 Legacy - A Heart to Worship

November 20, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • Psalm 65

It is a truism to say that everyone worships someone or something and what we worship shapes the trajectory of our life. Therefore, what we worship has a direct connection to the legacy we leave for others. David was a man who, despite his struggles and imperfections, had a heart to worship our God. This week, as we anticipate Thanksgiving, we will consider David's legacy of worship as preserved for us in Psalm 65. It is our prayer that you would build your life on right worship that will inspire others and lead them to Christ.

12 Legacy - The Importance of Finishing Well

November 27, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 1 Kings 2:1–4

This week marks the conclusion of our fall series that has sought to answer this one question, "What is the true measure of a life?" Our model for this weighty consideration has been king David who has proven to be a truly complex human being. That's good news for us, because we tend to be complex human beings and yet his life is proof that it's possible to please God in life and in death. It is our prayer that this brief series will equip each of us to do the very same thing with the one brief life we've been given to live.

06 Legacy - More Than My Intentions

October 9, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 2 Samuel 6:1–15

Have you ever had an experience where what you intended to do was not what you actually did? Most of us would say, yes, and the results are often called "accidents." The fact is, however, that most accidents aren't really accidents at all. They're the natural outcomes of poor choices that had unintended consequences. This week we will see king David intend to do something good but it ended in tragedy because of a series of poor choices. Each of us needs to wrestle with the fact that, in the end, our Legacy will not be measured by what we intended to do, but by the choices we actually made.

09 Legacy - Enough (part 2)

October 30, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • Psalm 51

Our legacy isn't built upon a record of perfection but it is built upon a record of repentance. None of us are perfect people. We fall down in many ways and yet, how we get back up matters immensely. This week we will explore how King David responded in genuine repentance after he was confronted by the prophet Nathan in his sin that, at one time, he was striving to keep secret. It is our hope that we will each learn how to repent and that we feel the urgency of it for the glory of God, the good of those around us, and for your own joy and assurance of faith.

08 Legacy - Enough (part 1)

October 23, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 2 Samuel 12:1–14

Have you had enough of sin? Most of us would like to say, yes and yet it remains an ever present potential. This week we will begin a two-part message concerning repentance beginning with the prophet Nathan's confrontation with David following his sins of adultery, murder, and deceit. David thought that he was fooling everyone and yet he was always fully seen by a holy God who gave him time to repent on his own. David’s hard heartedness demanded that, in time, the patience of God would have to give way to the discipline of God. God’s love requires Him to say enough.

10 Legacy - Impacting the Next Generation

November 6, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 2 Samuel 13:20–39

Our legacy is often measured by the impact our lives have on the lives of those around us. That's certainly true of the impact we have on children. One generation always leaves their fingerprints on the next. This week we will consider how David let his moral failures affect how he led his own children and responded to their sins. It is our hope that regardless of our past we might purpose to honor God in the present and leverage the influence that we've been given to make a positive impact on the next generation.

01 Legacy - Fulfilling the purposes of God

September 4, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • Acts 13:13–39

This week we are beginning our Fall series which will cause us to shine a spotlight on the life of King David with an eye towards answering this question, "What is the true measure of a life?" David was a complicated figure full of dualities and extremes. In that sense he is so much like us and yet God says that he was a man after His own heart and that he fulfilled the purposes of God in his generation. Can those things be said of you? Are you living a life that leaves a godly legacy that leads others to Christ? That's what we will consider in this series.

02 Legacy - The Heart that Beats in You

September 11, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 1 Samuel 16:1–13

Biblically speaking, the heart is the center of a person's being. It's the core of who a person is. It's the seat of our emotions and the birthplace of our desires. Understanding that is of utmost importance as we embark on this new series. If we truly desire to live a life that makes a difference and builds a godly legacy for those coming behind us, we must begin at the level of the heart. David was chosen, according to 1 Samuel 16, because of what God saw when He looked into his heart. The question becomes, then, what does God see when He looks into your heart and is that what you'd ultimately like Him to see?

03 Legacy - The battle Belongs to the Lord

September 18, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 1 Samuel 17:1–31

Have you ever found yourself facing what seemed like, in the moment, impossible odds? What thoughts went through your mind? Was it things like, am I strong enough, smart enough, or healthy enough to handle this? Do I have enough money in the bank to weather this storm? How am I going to fix this problem? We all face giants in life but our text this week makes it clear that to be in Christ means that we have a champion who fights for us, yet, we have to do our part. David will show us what that looks like as we see him face his giant in the name of the Lord.

04 Legacy - Choose Your Friends Wisely

September 25, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 1 Samuel 20

Human beings are social creatures by divine design. Therefore, we crave a sense of community that leave most people with an innate desire to belong somewhere. That desire drives us toward relationships. This week we will look into the relationship between David and Jonathan and seek to learn from their example. One thing is for certain, however, that is the fact that the people we surround ourselves with and the people we aspire to be like will have a tremendous influence on the life we live, for good or for bad.

05 Legacy - The Danger of an Unsettled Heart

October 2, 2022 • Pastor Doug Forman • 1 Samuel 21:10–15

At some point in our lives we will all face our "Goliath" and our "Saul." One is a battle fought in a moment in time. The other is a battle fought over time. One is scary and the other is exhausting. Both can make us forget our God and turn to false saviors who, ultimately, cannot save us. In this week's text we will see David, in his fear and desperation, turn to the enemies of God for rescue only to humiliate himself in his sin. If we want to live a life that leaves a godly legacy, we must live our one life fully dependent upon the one true and living God.
