On a walk to church on Christmas day, while hearing the London church bells ringing and reflecting upon the great angelic pronouncement found in Luke 2:8-14, Charles Wesley wrote his “Hymn for Christmas Day” poem. Originally published in 1739, with lyrics later edited by George Whitefield and then later set to new music by composer Felix Mendelssohn, this hymn is clearly one of our classics.
