S3E14 - The Gift of Tongues

March 2, 2022 • Curt Harlow, Dena Davidson • 1 Corinthians 14

We often get weirded out by the conversation of the gift of speaking in tongues or prophecy, so we decided to dig in a little deeper and see why Paul felt it was so important to discuss and how it's relevant for our lives and faith today. The point of 1 Corinthians 14 is to discuss when to come together as a church because your whole life is not about what is best for you - it's about what's best for building up the church. How do we do things that benefit the whole church? We are called to eagerly desire spiritual gifts - to strengthen, encourage, and comfort our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let’s lean into the awkward conversation about these gifts here to talk about what the text actually says and how we can live in light of this truth.

S3E8 - Using Freedom in Christ Wisely

November 10, 2021 • Dena Davidson, Brian Hopkins • 1 Corinthians 8

There are often a lot of gray areas in life - places where Scripture isn't 100% clear on what we are supposed to do or say, and we have to lean into what we do know about God to live functionally. This week on The Bible Study, Pastors Dena and Brian talk about how to walk in the liberty that Christ offers while holding true to the Gospel. We have a daily choice of legalism, license, or love. What would it take to choose love every day the way Jesus did? We're called to make it easier for others to come to know God, and only love can accomplish that. 1 Corinthians 8 lays it out for us to understand God's desires for right living better.

Our society places such a high value on sexual intimacy that it misplaces the value of every other aspect of relationships. 1 Corinthians 6 is like Law and Order meets Sex in the City, and Pastors Andrew McCourt, Caleb Kaltenbach, and Mark Clark sit down to talk about what it meant for the church in Corinth to change their ways and how we can too. Sexuality is an identity issue nowadays, and they break down the cost of sexual immorality in every facet, especially when it comes to sex outside of marriage. Have we made marriage an idol? How do you handle Christians who are in denial and rebellion of their sin? In this episode of The Bible Study, Pastor Curt Harlow and Mark Clark dive into the uncomfortable but extremely important conversation about sexual sin and arrogance among believers. Paul knew the harm it could cause and saw as sexual immorality was running rampant in the Corinthian church, drawing people further from the Gospel. Tune into Episode 5 to understand the context, theology, and application of the text from 1 Corinthians 5:1-8. The church in Corinth, similar to our world now, was viewing sexuality as identity and hurting their witness of the gospel. This Scripture is the antidote to our rebellious spirits and aligning with Jesus.

S3E4 - Rejecting Celebrity Christianity

October 13, 2021 • Curt Harlow, Pastor Michael Metcalf • 1 Corinthians 4

What does it look like to imitate Christ and reject Celebrity Christianity? Paul says we are to be "fools for Christ". He flips the script on what we tend to think Christianity should be by telling us to bless when we are persecuted. Instead of avoiding the struggle, we ought to see how much more Christ can work through our struggle when we welcome Him into it instead of praying to get out of it. Pastors Curt Harlow and Michael Metcalf walk through the context, text, theology and application of 1 Corinthians 4:8-21 as Paul is calling the church to walk in humility as they respond to the situations they face. They take a deeper look at what characteristics make a great leader and how we've been misguided in that in our own world today with celebrity culture running rampant. Where does Christ fit in? Tune in to understand the book of 1 Corinthians better, and be sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode.

S3E3 - Foundations of Faith

October 6, 2021 • Curt Harlow, Jason Caine • 1 Corinthians 3:1–15

Division because of celebrity culture, lack of wisdom because of following culture, and worldly dangers - sound familiar? It was to the church in Corinth too, and Paul addresses these things with the truth of the gospel to point them back to Jesus. We tend to think of "worldly" as the Las Vegas lifestyle - sexual sin, drugs, etc. But Paul doesn't start with that. He knew that our cause for Christ can grow to a religious zeal that causes arrogance, fighting, and division. In this episode, they tackle how to handle arguments wisely and understanding what sanctification is.

In this episode of The Bible Study, Pastors Andrew McCourt and Wesley Towne break down the passage of 1 Corinthians 2:10-16 and talk about the spirit of wisdom and where to find it in our every day lives. What does the gospel reveal to us? What does it look like to have a mind grounded in the truth of God? Tune in for a deeper look at the text so you can master God's Word.
