Breaking the Mold

A Gospel for the Forgotten - Gladstone

March 24, 2024 • Kayla Meredith • Luke 17:11–19

In this last scripture, Jesus is traveling from Galilee to Samaria (enemy territory for Jews). On the outskirts of a village there are 10 lepers. These lepers were literally marginalized or alienated, forced to live on the edge of the community for fear of their uncleanliness. In addition, they were not considered properly Jewish. We will talk about those that are pushed to the edge or marginalized today, and what it means that Jesus stopped and engaged those that the culture pushes away.

In this story Jesus encounters a woman who has been disabled for 18 years by a “spirit”. Jesus heals this woman and frees her to stand up straight. Today there are many of us that are held back, held down or over-burdened by all sorts of “spirits”. And Jesus offers us that same freedom to stand before him.

In this story Jesus is sharing a meal with a bunch of important people when a woman (and a known “sinner”) comes in to anoint his feet. While the Pharisees are grumbling, Jesus forgives her, blesses her, and lifts her up as a model of what it means to be faithful.

In a story unique to Luke, Jesus begins his public ministry by reading and preaching from the scroll of Isaiah, announcing God’s favor on those traditionally marginalized. We will use that scripture to open the series and then spend time with our first story, Jesus calling the “tax collector”. This is where he sums up the purpose of his ministry by saying, “a healthy person has no need for a physician, but rather the sick”. This sets the tone for who Jesus will choose to invest in over the course of his ministry.
