Art: "Ascension of Christ" by Giacomo Cavedone (Italy, Bologna; 1601 A.D.)

After giving an introduction to the events leading up to the Ascension of our Lord, Pastor Gjerde shares with us some reflections on the various accounts of the ascension found in Scripture. Passages discussed: John 20:11-18; Luke 24:36-49; Acts 1:1-11; Ephesians 1:3-4, 15-23

Why shouldn't Mary cling to the risen Lord? How does Jesus come closer to us because He is the ascended Lord? How can the Lord be clung to now He is at the right hand of the Father? Why is the ascension of our Lord such a wonderful yet misunderstood fact of our Lord's life, and also in the life of the Church?

Easter Study: Psalm 47 and the Ascension

Pastor Gjerde • Psalm 47

Pastor Gjerde shares with us some reflections on the 47th psalm. How does this psalm reveal to us the enthroned, ascended Lord Jesus Christ? How does the kingdom of this ascended Lord reign over the nations, gathering the peoples together? Psalm 47 (ESV) Clap your hands, all peoples! Shout to God with loud songs of joy! For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared, a great king over all the earth. He subdued peoples under us, and nations under our feet. He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet. Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises! For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm! God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. The princes of the peoples gather as the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong to God; he is highly exalted!

After giving an introduction to the events leading up to Acts 9, Pastor Gjerde shares with us some reflections on Acts 9:1-17, another post-resurrection (and ascension!) appearance of Jesus Christ to Saul/Paul on the road to Damascus. What does Saul learn about the Church through this encounter with the risen Lord? How connected is the Lord to His body, the Church, and why does that matter? Why and how does Jesus involved the greater Church in every conversion? What role does suffering play in the conversion of Paul and the ongoing mission of the Church? And like Ananias, how does the Church continue to lead converts deeper into the faith we believe, teach, and confess? How do people, generally speaking, come to faith in Jesus Christ?
