The Rich Young Man

Summer in the Son

July 4, 2021 • Jay Scott • Matthew 19:16–26

In Matthew 19:16, a man asks Jesus, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"

The most obvious problem with this question is the assumption that we can earn eternal life. When Jesus answers the young man, he goes away sad. For the rest of us, Jesus' answer clearly illustrates that God doesn't want religion -- He wants relationship.

--Jesus is strategic about "Rest" being a part of worship. --The Crucifixion of Jesus is the most SIGNIFICANT event in human history, while the Resurrection is the most AMAZING event in human history! --How has following Jesus been difficult for you in your world? --The empty tomb promises us that we'll always have HOPE! --He has RISEN from the dead and is going ahead of us! Prayer: Lord Jesus, please go ahead of me in this ________.

The Last Supper

August 22, 2021 • Jay Scott • Matthew 26:17–30

Most of us are familiar with The Last Supper. We know it was the prelude to Jesus' arrest, trial and crucifixion. It was the evening when Jesus said that someone would betray him and Peter said he would never deny the Lord. It was also the evening when Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and broke it... this was the first communion. "Take and eat; this is my body. Drink... this is my blood of the covenant." It is important for us to understand that communion is a "we" thing, not just a "me" thing. You receive communion as an individual (bread & wine), but we partake of it together in community. Things to consider while taking communion: • At this moment, what am I most thankful for? • As I take the bread, representing the body of Jesus, I remember Jesus has given all of us life and life to the full. (John 10:10) • Is there sin that I am afraid to confess to Jesus? What might that be? (It’s okay to confess, He already knows and longs to forgive and restore us.) • As I take the juice, representing the blood of Jesus that forgives us of all sin, I remember that it is by grace that I have been saved! (Ephesians 2:8)
