We are commanded to sing in the New Testament. Music is not just for the "experts" to do, despite what our culture suggests and how the evangelical church in recent years has discipled Christians. As people who have been redeemed by the blood of Christ and rescued from our sins, what higher reason can there be for singing? Singing should feel as natural to us as speaking (Zephaniah 3:17, Job 38:7). Music and singing should adorn our lives—not serve merely utilitarian purposes or function as social media “Facebook moments.”
We desire the upcoming generations of young Christians to both create music and become musically literate—just as they are literate in the English language and in the Word of God. We are worshippers all day, every day. Our hope is that our young people will also become worshippers of the Triune, holy God, living lives of continuous worship as they grow into young adults. Wherever God calls them in life, may they carry this heart of worship into their adult callings.
Psalm 101:1 "I will sing of steadfast love and justice; to you, O Lord, I will make music."
Psalm 33:2-3 "Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre; make melody to him with the harp of ten strings! Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts."
Colossians 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God."
Ephesians 5:19 "......addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ."
If God has commanded His people to sing to Him, we should strive to learn and improve how we do so. The more familiar our children are with singing God's Word and making music, the harder it will be for the world to manipulate them through music.
