7 - His Insight is Piercing, Mark 7:1-23

June 24, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Jesus is challenged by the Pharisees when they notice that his disciples do not follow the tradition of the elders by failing to ceremonially wash their hands. Jesus teaches that our defiled hearts are at the center of our problem and not that which is external to us. 1. Their challenge (vs. 1-5) 2. His response (vs. 6-13) 3. After Jesus made his disciples leave in a boat, they encounter a powerful wind that makes their journey difficult. In a dramatic display of his divinity, Jesus approaches the disciples walking on the water. Terrified, they assume they are seeing a ghost. Jesus, calling for courage, gets into the boat with them and the wind ceases. Upon arrival, Jesus continues his miraculous demonstrations of healing. 1. The set-up (vs. 45-46) 2. The struggle (vs. 47-48a) 3. The revelation (vs. 48b-50) 4. Their response (vs. 51-52) 5. 5 - His Compassion is Great, Mark 6:30-44

June 10, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Though seeking a time of solitude and refreshment, Jesus’ plans are dashed when crowds recognize him and the disciples. Rather than displaying anger or frustration, Jesus “had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd” and miraculously meets their need. 1. Jesus cares about you (vs. 30-32) 2. Jesus cares about others (vs. 33-34) 3. Jesus stretches our faith (vs. 35-37) 4. Jesus meets our needs (vs. 38-41) 5. 4 - His Mission is Clear, Mark 6:6b-30

June 3, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Jesus invests his apostles with power and sends them out to spread his gospel. Mark highlights the growing opposition facing Jesus and his followers by recounting the death of John the Baptist. Even in the face of great danger, Jesus will be undaunted in his Father’s mission. 1. Partners in the gospel (vs. 6b-7) a. Specific instructions (vs. 8-11) b. Powerful ministry (vs. 12-13) 2. 3 - Without Honor, Mark 6:1-6a

May 20, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Despite the tremendous demonstrations of his power throughout the region, those in his own hometown of Nazareth reject him. Like the prophets of old, Jesus is opposed and his message is disregarded; a foreshadowing of things to come in Jerusalem. Might we find in our own hearts the faith to believe. The Sovereign without honor (vs. 1-6a) 1. Jesus was very average 2. Familiarity can be a stumbling block to faith 3. Let’s pull for the next generation 4. Faith is not an equation 5. Your family may not believe yet 6. Our faith impacts his work 7. Failure is to be expected among the faithful 8. It is not our sin but our unbelief that he marvels at SONGS Your Love Awakens Me #7054720 by C Quilala and P Wickham © Capitol CMG Genesis Call Upon The Lord #7051501 by C Brown and S Furtick 2015 © Be Essential Songs Worthy Of Your Name #7052927 by B Younker and S Curran © sixsteps Music Over All I Know #7105439 by A Rozier, J Ingram, & J Cates All Essential Music This I Believe (The Creed) #7018338 by B Fielding and M Crocker 2014 © Hillsong Music Publishing Praise The King #7032344 by C Voss, D Smith, M Bryce Jr., & M Farren 2014 © Farren Love And War Publishing

2 - Over Death, Mark 5:21-43

While people began to recognize the power of Jesus over sickness, they had not yet seen his power over death itself. When a father is confronted with unimaginable grief, Jesus responds “Do not fear, only believe” (Mark 5:36), and confounds an unbelieving crowd by raising a girl from the dead. 1. A Father (vs. 21-24) 2. A woman (vs. 25-28) 3. Faith (vs. 29-34) 4. Satan and his minions come only to “steal and kill and destroy”, but Jesus came to give life and free us from his bondage. Jesus demonstrates his power over the forces of hell by freeing a man from demonic bondage. He then instructs the man to go and be a witness to the incredible power of God. 1. Demons: Bent on destruction (vs. 1-5) 2. Jesus: The one who can save (vs. 6-13) 3. The crowd: Filled only with fear (vs. 14-17) 4.
