Jesus: The Servant

Mark 7:24 - Mark 10:45

10 - On Humility, Mark 10:32-45

November 25, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Contrary to the world, followers of Christ see leadership as an opportunity to serve those entrusted to them. We follow the example of Jesus who, “came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45). As we look ahead to the advent season, what a tremendous opportunity to serve those around us. 1. The road to Jerusalem (vs. 32-34) 2. Our selfish hearts (vs. 35-40) 3. Our culture’s grip (vs. 41-44) 4. 9 - On Wealth, Mark 10:17-31

November 18, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

A young man thinks that his acts of righteousness should secure him eternal life. Jesus reveals the duplicity of the young man’s heart by instructing him to sell all that he has. Regrettably, “he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.” (Mark 10:22b). We must never allow the accumulation of earthly wealth to supersede our love for God. 1. The question of eternal life (vs. 17-20) 2. The radical call of discipleship (vs. 21-22) 3. The stumbling block of wealth (vs. 23-27) 4. 8 - On Divorce, Mark 10:1-16

November 11, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

The Pharisees seek to test Jesus by asking a question on the subject of divorce. Jesus responds by pointing to God’s plan and desire at creation. When marriages struggle, we must remind them of God’s heart for marriage and encourage couples who are seeking to work through their challenges. 1. It’s a trap (vs. 1-4) 2. The purpose of marriage (vs. 5-9) 3. The equality in marriage (vs. 10-12) 4. 7 - See Clearly, Mark 9:30-50

October 27, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Jesus foretells his death for a second time and again his disciples fail to understand and instead begin to argue about who was the “greatest” among them. Jesus takes the opportunity to teach them about humility, service to others and the gravity of sin. We need pray for the ability to see ourselves and sin clearly. 1. The struggle is real (vs. 30-32) 2. See clearly (vs. 33-50) a. Seek to serve (vs. 33-37) b. Seek to support (vs. 38-41) c. 6 - All Things Are Possible Mark 9:14-29

October 21, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

When the disciples are unable to help a man’s son who is possessed by a demon, Jesus calls upon the father to have faith and believe. The father acknowledges his spiritual weakness and asks Jesus to give him faith. Rather than chide him for his unbelief, Jesus responds to his cry. 1. The absence of faith (vs. 14-19) 2. The object of our faith (vs. 20-24) 3. The power of faith (vs. 25-27) 4. 5 - Listen to Him, Mark 9:2-13

October 14, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Nothing could have prepared Peter, James and John for the radiant and divine Jesus that stood before them, but even then, they fail to grasp who he is in all of his glory. Out of the cloud, the Father speaks and says, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” (Mark 9:7). Still today, to deny the Son is to reject the one that sent him. 1. The glory of Christ (vs. 2-4) 2. The foolishness of people (vs 5-6) 3. The command of God (vs. 7-8) 4. 4 - You are the Christ, Mark 8:27-9:1

September 30, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Peter confesses Jesus as the Christ and Jesus begins to teach them that, contrary to their understanding, the Messiah must suffer and die. Similarly, as we follow Christ we must not expect a life of decadence and ease, but following his example, be willing to deny ourselves, take up his cross and follow him. 1. Answer correctly (vs. 27-30) 2. Understand rightly (vs. 31-33) 3. Live accordingly (v. 34) 4. 3 - Our Hard Hearts. Mark 8:1-26

September 23, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

The Pharisees demand that Jesus give them a sign from heaven to confirm his identity. However, Jesus has already demonstrated who he is and the one with an open heart should recognize it. When we struggle to believe, we should ask God to soften our hearts and give us faith. 1. The hungry are fed (vs. 1-10) 2. The self-righteous get nothing (vs. 11-13) 3. Do not miss the obvious (vs. 14-21) 4. 2 - His Healing Touch, Mark 7:31-37

September 16, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

When people bring Jesus a deaf man with a speech impediment, he curiously “put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue” (Mark 7:33b). Jesus not only heals the man, but by connecting his word with deed, he seeks to address his disciples’ spiritual blindness and deafness. 1. A friend in need (vs. 31-32) 2. People matter to Jesus (v. 33a) 3. Jesus frees people (vs. 33b-35) 4. 1 - We Can Be Saved, Mark 7:24-30

September 9, 2018 • Josh Lindstrom

Jesus first came for the Jewish people, but he envisioned a day when the gospel would be spread to all nations (Mark 13:10). In this starting passage, we see Jesus respond to the faith of a Gentile woman and in doing so, recognize that we too can be saved. 1. A short break (v. 24) 2. An outsider asks for help (vs. 25-26) 3. Jesus’ response – “Not yet” (v. 27) 4. The outsider understands – Faith & Humility (v. 28) 5.
