The Book of Titus

7 - Avoid & Learn, Titus 3:9-15

June 23, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

While we would hope that all would respond to biblical correction in their lives, some, even after being duly warned, will persist in the error of our ways. We are to separate ourselves from those who stir up division and instead devote ourselves “to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need” (Titus 3:14). 1. What to avoid (vs. 9-11) 2. What to support (vs. 12-14) 3. 6 - Obedient & Ready, Titus 3:1-8

June 16, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

Living godly lives does not preclude us from interacting with the world but, on the contrary, should encourage us “to be ready for every good work” (Titus 3:1). Recognizing what Christ has done for us, we seek to follow his example and have a positive and beneficial impact on those around us. 1. Our example (vs. 1-2) 2. Our past (v. 3) 3. 5 - Grace & Training, Titus 2:11-15

June 9, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

The life we are called to live in Christ is not one that will occur naturally to us. It is a gift of grace and requires a conscious decision “training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age” (Titus 2:12). As fellow recipients of his grace, we unabashedly encourage each other to the pattern of life he has called us to. 1. Grace has appeared (v. 11) 2. Train accordingly (vs. 12-13) a. Renounce sin (v. 12a) b. Live righteously (v. 12b) c. With joy (vs. 12c-13) 3. Always remember (v. 14) 4. 4 - Sound Doctrine & Self-Control, Titus 2:1-10

June 2, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

Sound doctrine should lead to right behavior, and in Titus 2:1-10 the apostle Paul gives specific instruction for various groups within the church. While it can be counter-cultural to modern ears, Paul’s direction finds its foundation in the gospel itself and highlights the behaviors that make not only families strong, but creates churches that point an unbelieving world to Jesus. 1. Teach sound doctrine (v. 1) a. Older men (v. 2) b. Older women (vs. 3-4a) c. Younger women (vs. 4b-5) d. Younger men (v. 6) 2. Be an example (v. 7-8) a. 3 - Profession & Works, 1 Titus 1:10-16

May 26, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

False teachers on the island of Crete were threatening the young churches. While they professed to know God, they denied him by their works (Titus 1:16) and the apostle Paul instructs Titus to “rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith” (Titus 1:13). We too must be on guard and give careful attention to those we allow to speak into our lives. 1. The problem (v. 10) 2. The remedy (v. 11) 3. Do not be discouraged (vs. 12-13a) 4. Love well (vs. 13b-14) 5. 2 - Order & Authority, Titus 1:5-9

May 5, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

The young churches in Crete lacked biblical leadership, so the apostle Paul encourages Titus to “appoint elders in every town” (Titus 1:5) and gives him a picture of the kinds of leaders he should be looking for. While not everybody will be called to serve in an official leadership role in the church, the qualities and characteristics of an elder should be the pursuit of us all. 1. The reason for Titus (v. 5) 2. Who is an elder? (vs. 6-9) a. An example (vs. 6-8) b. 1 - Knowledge & Godliness, Titus 1:1-4

April 28, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

Upon coming to faith in Jesus we do not simply secure eternal life, but should seek to have the pattern of our daily lives transformed by our faith in him. Our knowledge of the gospel should lead us to live godly lives that give testimony to the truth that is in us. This pursuit is not an optional one, but rather is “entrusted by the command of God our Savior” (Titus 1:3). 1. The author (v. 1a) 2. His purpose (v. 1b) 3. Our motivation (vs. 2-3) 4.
