Jesus: The Savior

Mark 10:46-14:31

10 - The Passover, Mark 14:12-31

March 31, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

The disciples seek to make preparations for the celebration of the Passover and Jesus foretells of his coming betrayal. At the Passover meal, Jesus institutes what we will come to call The Lord’s Supper and identifies himself with the bread and the cup. When Jesus foretells of Peter’s coming denial, Peter emphatically rejects it. When we approach the Lord’s table today, we are reminded of his body given for us and his blood shed for the forgiveness of our sins. 1. His plan (vs. 12-16) 2. God’s purpose (vs. 17-21) 3. 9 - The Plot, Mark 14:1-11

March 17, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

As the chief priests and scribes sought to arrest Jesus and have him killed, they found a willing accomplice in Jesus’ disciple Judas. Despite their secrecy, Jesus was not naïve to what awaited him and praised a woman for her generous outpouring of love in preparation for his burial. Though some of the disciples viewed it as wasteful, Jesus declares her devotion will be remembered wherever the gospel is proclaimed. 1. They were seeking to kill (vs. 1-2) 2. She was wanting to bless (v. 3) 3. Some chose to scold (vs. 4-5) 4. Jesus calls for honor (vs. 6-9) 5. 8 - The End of the Age, Mark 13:1-37

March 10, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

While no one knows the day of Jesus’ return, Jesus encourages us not to fear the coming judgment, but rather to live each day in light of his coming. We must trust him in the midst of the suffering we may encounter and remain steadfast in our commitment to him. Confident in his victory, we live in great anticipation of his glory to come. 1. Jesus predicts the destruction of the temple (vs. 1-4) 2. Jesus prepares his people for the future (vs. 5-23) 3. Jesus looks forward to his return (vs. 24-27) 4. 7 - The Widow's Offering Mark 12:35-44

February 24, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

While his opponents fail to recognize Jesus for who he is, Jesus warns his followers of those who give only the appearance of faithfulness. When a poor widow makes a small contribution, Jesus commends her generosity and faith. We need remember that God looks at the heart and, though our efforts may not be celebrated by others, God sees and recognizes our faith. 1. Veiled glory (vs. 35-37) 2. Hidden hypocrisy (vs. 38-40) 3. 6 - The Great Commandment, Mark 12:28-34

February 17, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

A well-intentioned scribe approaches Jesus and asks, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” (Mark 12:28). Jesus points to our love for God and love for others as being the greatest commandments for us to follow. When the scribe agrees, Jesus tells him that he is, “not far from the kingdom of God” (Mark 12:34). As followers of Christ, we recognize we are commanded to love well, and seek his help when we find it difficult to do so. 1. The question/questioner (v. 28) 2. Jesus’ answer (vs. 29-31) a. 5 - The Wisdom of Christ, Mark 12:13-27

February 10, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

The opponents of Jesus persist in their efforts to try and trap and discredit Jesus. They first question him in regards to the paying of taxes to Caesar, and then challenge him on the legitimacy of the resurrection of the dead. In both cases, Jesus shows he is more than up to the challenge. We need be mindful that when we bring our questions to Christ, if only trying to prove our own point, we too will find the wisdom of Christ far exceeds our own. 1. An effort to discredit (vs. 13-14) 2. Jesus knew their hypocrisy (vs. 15-17) 3. An attempt to ridicule (vs. 18-23) 4. Jesus highlights their ignorance (vs. 24-27) SONGS Yes I Will #7105442 by E Hoagland, J Smith, & M Fieldes © All Essential Music The Lord Our God #6518055 by J Ingram & K Stanfill 2013© sixsteps Music Over All I Know #7105439 by A Rozier, J Ingram, & J Cates © All Essential Music Do It Again #7067555 by C Brown, M Brock, M Redman, & S Furtick © Elevation Worship Publishing God I Look To You #5858163 by J Johnson 2010 © Bethel Music

4 - The Parable of the Tenants, Mark. 12:1-12

February 3, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

Recognizing the hardness of the religious leaders’ hearts, Jesus tells a parable that points to their coming judgment. Even though they realize the parable to be speaking against them, they refuse to soften and continue to seek his arrest. This passage is a sobering reminder that, even though some will hear the truth, they will remain steadfast in their opposition to Jesus. 1. A vineyard (v. 1) 2. 3 - The Judgment, Mark 11:12-33

January 20, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

Upon entering Jerusalem, Jesus recognizes that all is not well in their spiritual capital. Jesus figuratively curses a fig tree and then begins to cleanse the temple of its iniquity. Rather than receive his correction, the religious authorities challenge Jesus and are unwilling to acknowledge him and his ministry. While sometimes painful, it is always best for us to acknowledge our failings and turn from our sin. 1. The fig tree & the temple (vs. 12-19) 2. The beginning of the end (vs. 20-25) 3. 2 - The Triumphal Entry Mark 11:1-11

January 13, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

At the beginning of the Passover week, in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, Jesus enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey. The people hail him as their Davidic messiah, laying their cloaks and leafy branches on the ground with shouts of “Hosanna!” In a culture that does not see, we acknowledge Christ as our Messiah and affirm that one day all people will recognize Jesus for who he truly is. 1. Jesus knew who he was (vs. 1-3) 2. Jesus wanted them to see (vs. 4-6) 3. They saw but did not recognize (vs. 7-10) 4. 1 - The Son of David, Mark 10:46-52

January 6, 2019 • Josh Lindstrom

While the disciples continue to struggle to understand Jesus, Jesus encounters a blind beggar named Bartimaeus. Bartimaeus declares his faith in Christ and asks for his sight to be restored. Jesus heals Bartimaeus and, in doing so, continues to point the disciples to his gospel mission. When our friends and families fail to recognize Jesus for who he is, we ask in faith for God to grant them sight. 1. A blind beggar (v. 46) 2. A persistent faith (vs. 47-48) 3.
