False teachers on the island of Crete were threatening the young churches. While they professed to know God, they denied him by their works (Titus 1:16) and the apostle Paul instructs Titus to “rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith” (Titus 1:13). We too must be on guard and give careful attention to those we allow to speak into our lives.

The life we are called to live in Christ is not one that will occur naturally to us. It is a gift of grace and requires a conscious decision “training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age” (Titus 2:12).
