Did Joseph Smith Translate the Characters on the Book of Abraham Papyrus?

QUESTION FOR MORMONS: Did Joseph Smith Translate the Characters in the Book of Abraham Papyrus? The Book of Abraham is considered one of the standard works (scriptures) of the Mormon Church. Alleged by Joseph Smith to be a "translation" of the writings of the Hebrew patriarch Abraham recorded on the Egyptian papyrus fragments sold to Joseph Smith by Michael Chandler in 1835, this book of Mormon scripture serves as the foundation for many of the unique, non-Christian beliefs of Mormonism, such as preexistence and the idea that Jesus and Lucifer are spirit brothers. Yet, the Mormon Church now admits: "None of the characters on the papyrus fragments mentioned Abraham’s name or any of the events recorded in the book of Abraham. Mormon and non-Mormon Egyptologists agree that the characters on the fragments do not match the translation given in the book of Abraham... . "Scholars have identified the papyrus fragments as parts of standard funerary texts that were deposited with mummified bodies. These fragments date to between the third century B.C.E. and the first century C.E., long after Abraham lived." With this admission that Joseph Smith didn't actually translate the characters of the vignettes displayed in the Book of Abraham, credibility as to Joseph Smith's translation capabilities come into serious question. Is God responsible for Joseph Smith's failure to accurately translate these Egyptian documents, or was Joseph Smith making everything up? If he couldn't accurately "translate" a document that scholars are able to examine today, how can we trust his "translations" of the gold plates of the Book of Mormon, especially as those plates are not available for any scholar to be able to examine and verify today?
