Jesus’ earthly mission is all about the coming kingdom of God. As we read in Mark 1:16-34, it begins in Galilee with a series of dramatic words and deeds. He calls his first disciples, he casts out demons, and he heals the sick. Who is this person and what is he doing? Well, Jesus is doing a dramatic new thing to rescue and renew a needy world. Jesus’ own family were sometimes puzzled by what he said and did. Some of the scribes even accused him of being aligned with Satan rather than God. The best way to make sense of all this is to see that Jesus’ mission is to rescue and renew our often confused and corrupt world, so that we can participate in the kingdom of God.
