How Sure is Your Salvation

March 13, 2022 • Pastor Allen Bonnell • Luke 23:43

How Sure is Your Salvation
Luke 23:43

1. I will meet God after I die.

Luke 23:40 - But the other criminal protested, “Don’t you fear God even when you have been sentenced to die?

Hebrews 9:27 - And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment

2. I have sinned against God.

Luke 23:41 - We deserve to die for our crimes...”

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

3. Jesus is more than a man.

Luke 23:41 - "...but this man hasn’t done anything wrong.”

Ecclesiastes 7:20 - "There is not a single person in all the earth who is always good and never sins."

2 Corinthians 5:21 - For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
4. Only God's grace can save me.

Luke 23:42 - Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.

Ephesians 2:8-9 - God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
5. Jesus will save me if I ask Him

Luke 23:42 - Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

Acts 16:31 - They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household.”
HOW CAN I BE SURE I AM SAVED?

Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43

It is IMMEDIATE - "Today"

It is CERTAIN - "you will"

It is RELATIONSHIP - "be with me"

It is FOREVER - "in paradise"

14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:14-15

WHEN CAN I BE SAVED?

2 Corinthians 6:2 - For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.

Romans 10:13 - "Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Who Is Jesus?

Who is Jesus? Who would you say Jesus is? _____________________ People are known by what they say, what they do, and what others say about them. What people say… “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” — Luke 23:34 Forgiveness “Truly I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.” — Luke 23:43 Assurance ““Woman, behold, your son!”  Then He said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” — John 19:26 Compassion “My God, my God, why have you forsaken Me?” — Mark 15:34 Loneliness “I thirst.” — John 19:28 Humanity “It is finished.” — John 19:30 Victory “It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the entire land until the ninth hour, because the sun stopped shining; and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.” And having said this, He died. Luke 23:44-46 “That was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God” John 5:18 Psalm 31:4-5 (NASB), “You will pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, For You are my strength. Into Your hand I entrust my spirit; You have redeemed me, Lord, God of truth.” What people do… Matthew 27:50-53, “And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.  Also the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.  Veil Torn Earth Shook Rocks Split Tombs Opened Hebrews 9:2-3, 6-7, “There were two rooms in that Tabernacle. In the first room were a lampstand, a table, and sacred loaves of bread on the table. This room was called the Holy Place. Then there was a curtain, and behind the curtain was the second room called the Most Holy Place. When these things were all in place, the priests regularly entered the first room as they performed their religious duties. But only the high priest ever entered the Most Holy Place, and only once a year. And he always offered blood for his own sins and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.” Jesus is the final High Priest. The cross is the New Testament Mercy Seat. Hebrews 9:22, “For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.” What is said about them… “Now as for the centurion and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” Matthew 27:54 Who do you say Jesus is?

It Is Finished

April 10, 2022 • Pastor Allen Bonnell • John 19:28–37

It is Finished John 19:28-37 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. 31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” Tetelestai = it is finished 1. The task assigned by the Father is finished. John 17:4 “I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.” Psalm 22:31 They will come and will declare His righteousness To a people who will be born, that He has performed it. 2. Jesus, the perfect sacrifice, was offered for sins. Hebrews 9:12 12 He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining[a] eternal redemption. 3. Your debt was paid. 4. You are new in Christ. “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.” (John 12:23–24) Philippians 1:6 “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion (from epi and teleo) at the day of Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15, 54When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” 55“Where, O Death, is your victory? Where, O Death, is your sting?” 56The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.…

The Suffering Son of Man

April 3, 2022 • Pastor Allen Bonnell • John 19:28–29

The Suffering Son of Man John 19:28-29 Hebrews 4:15 “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” Jesus physically suffered, atonement Psalm 22:15, “My mouth is dried up like a potsherd and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.” Jesus was 100% man, the incarnation “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” John 1:14 “Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” Philippians 2:6-8 kenosis = emptied Nicene Creed puts it, “For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human.” Jesus took our punishment, substitution. “And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” 1 John 2:2 NASB "Take a branch of the hyssop plant, dip it into the bowl filled with blood, and then wipe the blood on the sides and tops of the doorframes." Exodus 12:22 John 4:11 “Sir,” the woman replied, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where then will You get this living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock?” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. 14 But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a fount of water springing up to eternal life.”
