The book of Ruth is a well-known story of redemption, but it also provides a striking vision of how God desires for men and women to labor together to accomplish that redemption. This counter-cultural, dynamic relationship of self-sacrifice provides a template for how God intends to work through His people – both men and women – to accomplish His good gospel purposes of redemption in the world today.

Redemption Realized

In the final chapter, Boaz acts upon Ruth’s plan to redeem Naomi, and the LORD blesses the self-sacrifice of both Ruth and Boaz by providing a son. As the story concludes the beautiful declaration resounds, “Blessed be the LORD, who has not left you [Naomi] this day without a redeemer!” And in Naomi’s redemption the LORD God has also provided the line of the Messiah, the path of redemption for all His people. Today’s passage is Ruth 4:13-22

Redemption Promised

As the barley harvest season concludes, Naomi hatches a plan to safeguard and redeem Ruth’s future. However, Ruth has also learned a few things about God’s Law for His people, and she sets her sights on nothing less than Naomi’s redemption. Both plans rest on Naomi’s relative, Boaz, and his willingness to self-sacrificially endanger his own future for the sake of redeeming the vulnerable. Today’s passage is Ruth 3.

The Hope of Redemption

The story of redemption continues as Ruth, Naomi’s daughter-in-law, ventures into the fields of Bethlehem to glean. As she does, Ruth encounters Boaz, one of Naomi’s relatives. And in the fields of Bethlehem Naomi begins to see a glimmer of hope that God may yet provide some measure of redemption for her. Today’s passage is Ruth 2.
