One of the most critical and challenging moments in our Lord’s ministry was the selection of 12 individuals to be his apostolic witnesses. To understand just how critical and challenging that moment of choice was in relation to us we need to understand the word “apostle” as Jesus used it.

In and through the person of Jesus, God’s King, the Kingdom of God approached the towns and villages along the road to Jerusalem. It was dark territory long held captive in Satan’s cosmic rebellion against God’s rule. Seventy-two messengers were sent ahead into the darkness to announce the Kings approach. Luke 10 is their story.

In Christian discipleship, direction is set by Jesus. He leads. We follow. Periodically we need be reminded of that basic reality – clearly and firmly. Luke chapter nine was one of those basic reminder moments for the first disciples. In the reading of it, we are brought back to the simple reality that following Jesus means following Jesus.

Today we resume our extended sermon series in the Gospel of Luke with a return to God's confirming declaration and commanding directive with respect to his Son as found in Luke 9:35. We do so with the prayer that as we continue on through the Gospel of Luke, the Word of God and the Spirit of God would shape our hearts around the reality of the Son of God.
