Lepers were the untouchables of ancient Israel. Common belief held that the condition was rooted in sin and contaminated all that came in contact with the sinner. This was a disease that required more than healing. It required a cleansing that only God could provide. In today’s text Jesus touches a leper and there is cleansing.

As Jesus heads toward Jerusalem and His crucifixion, the cosmic battle between Him and the spiritual forces of evil are coming to a head. In the midst of this conflict, Jesus continually demonstrates His power over Satan’s demonic forces. Jesus points to His power as proof that the Kingdom of God has come, and the rule and power of Satan is being broken in Jesus’ ministry.

Throughout the Gospel according to Luke we read of Jesus praying. At times it is in the midst of a large crowd. At other times it is in the seclusion of night on a mountain top. Regardless, one thing Luke wants us to understand is that Jesus was a man of prayer, so it should not surprise us that Jesus’ disciples asked Him to teach them to pray as well. Today we will study Jesus’ lesson on prayer.
The Good Samaritan

God calls us to love Him with all of our being and to love our neighbors as ourselves. But what does it mean to love our neighbor? Who is our neighbor? To answer these questions, Jesus told a story about a man who encountered someone in need. This story - The Good Samaritan - challenges the ways we seek to justify ourselves and points us to the true and better Good Samaritan: Jesus.
