Luke chapter 6:20-49 provides one of the most concise practical summaries of Christian Discipleship as found in the teachings of Jesus. We are spending these four weeks working through His message with the goal of living it. Thus far we have worked out way through the pattern, the perspective, and the practice of discipleship. This week we consider a parable.

Repentance and Readiness

As Jesus neared the end of his final journey to Jerusalem, crowds increased and reactions intensified. In the press of those final months, two themes repeatedly emerged in his teaching: repentance and readiness. Both of these themes are grounded in the reality that after his death Jesus would rise from the dead and will one day return to judge and rule over all. Today we hear these themes as he taught them.

Covetousness is the greedy desire for more that never knows the freedom, peace, and joy of simply saying, “I have enough.” Sometimes it is driven by a sense of injustice. Other times is fueled by an ever expanding appetite for pleasure. Often it is the harried press of worry that keeps us grasping for more. Whatever the type of greed there is only one way to deal with it: listen to Jesus. This will be our goal today.

Luke 11:37-12:12. Two dramatically different scenes. One central concern. Hypocrisy. It is a horrible and contagious sin that seldom looks awful initially and is rarely spread knowingly – even when it is at epidemic levels. It is the Ebola virus of the soul, and there is really only one way to deal with it: listen to Jesus.
