The Israelites, the chosen people of God, were enslaved and oppressed by Egyptians for centuries. They had experienced suffering and injustice, yet in the midst of it all, God did not forget nor forsake them. God had remembered His promise to deliver His people from slavery that they may leave Egypt and walk in the life He has planned for them (Genesis 15:13โ€“14). So God, through Moses, told the Pharaoh to let His people go, or else Egypt would suffer the wrath of His justice. But even as He unleashed His power, God still showed His mercy and grace. Letโ€™s look at this display in our lesson today.ย

Around this time, God had repeatedly warned the Pharaoh that He would unleash plagues as a result of his stubbornness. Even though God had already shown His miraculous power turning the Nile into blood and turning a staff into a snake which defeated the power of Pharaohโ€™s magicians, the Pharaoh hardened his heart. Because of his pride and abuses on Godโ€™s people for many centuries, God enacted His justice and unleashed many plagues as punishment. Not only did the Pharaoh suffer, but the Egyptians, his people, suffered, too. Why do you think the Pharaoh did not follow Godโ€™s command to let His people go?

Every time the Lord sent out a plague, He spared Goshen, the land where the Israelites dwelt. God protected His people, shielding them from His punishment on the Pharaoh and the Egyptians, but His mercy and grace didnโ€™t end there. Aside from His people, some Egyptians and their slaves and property were spared from destruction because they feared the Lord, listening and responding accordingly to what He said and declared through Moses. How does this truth encourage you today?ย

Contrary to popular belief, God does not withhold His mercy and compassion from people. He is a benevolent God who hears His peopleโ€™s cries and desires to be with us. Because of this, He sent Jesus through which we receive the grace and mercy of God, even though weโ€™re not part of the line of Israel. In Jesus, we not only become Godโ€™s people, but we are adopted into Godโ€™s family. As we trust God and put our faith in Jesus, we can experience freedom and grace in times of need, hardship, and suffering.ย

โ€ข Are you a part of Godโ€™s people, His family? Ask someone to pray with you to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior, for in Him we can be adopted into Godโ€™s family and find mercy and grace.

โ€ข Is there something that God has been telling you to do? How will the way you respond change in light of what weโ€™ve learned today?ย

โ€ข How can your trust in and obedience to God grow more this season? What are some practical steps you can take towards this in the coming week?

โ€ข Thank God for sending Jesus so we can be adopted into His family and become part of His people. Thank Him that now, we can also be recipients of His mercy and grace.

โ€ข Ask God for the grace, wisdom, and power to always listen to and obey His word.

โ€ข Pray that as you trust and obey God, others will witness His faithfulness and miraculous power at work in your life.ย
