The Israelitesโ crossing of the Red Sea is perhaps one of the most widely known miracles from the Bible. Many are drawn to it because it shows how an oppressed people were able to rise above the odds stacked against them. After leaving Egypt and walking in obedience to God, they were now faced with another roadblock. This week, letโs look at what this crossing of the Red Sea meant for the Israelites that time.ย

After centuries of oppression, the Israelites were finally allowed to leave Egypt. However, as they left, the Pharaoh changed his mind and chased after them with his army. With the Egyptians in pursuit, the sea ahead of them, and mountains all around, it seemed like there was no way out. Moses encouraged Godโs people, saying, โ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ฅ ๐ธ๐ช๐ญ๐ญ ๐ง๐ช๐จ๐ฉ๐ต ๐ง๐ฐ๐ณ ๐บ๐ฐ๐ถ,โ and indeed, He came through for them. God parted the sea and made a way for them to walk on dry ground safely. And when the Egyptians were on their tail, He brought the sea back to normal so that the Egyptians drowned. What was the result of this great display of Godโs power (Exodus 14:18, 31)?

Leaving Egypt was not easy. It was all they had ever known, having been its inhabitants for centuries. Now, as they followed Godโs plan for them, some had become hesitant, seeing their impossible situation. Miraculously crossing through the Red Sea was the signal from God that their ordeal in Egypt was over. As the Red Sea closed, there was now no turning back. They had been delivered from slavery and they could now enjoy knowing God and living in His plans and promises. If you were an Israelite during their time, how would you have reacted?

Those from other nations who heard about this miracle recognized that God is in the heavens above and on the earth beneath (Joshua 2:10โ11). Even some Egyptians who had seen and heard about Godโs miraculous deeds went with the Israelites as they left (Exodus 12:38). The deliverance and promises of God were not just for the Israelites then, but for those who believe, whether from other nations or from the generations to come. How can this encourage us who believe in God today?
Just like the Israelites, God through Jesus also invites us to experience complete deliverance from our sin that enslaves and binds us. Ultimately, the enemy, sin, and death have been defeated by Jesus. For those who put their faith in Him, there is now no turning back. We are no longer slaves and we can now live in the freedom, promises, and purposes God has for us in Christ.
