Victorious Christian Living

Colossians 3:5 (NASB)

5 Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Col 3:3 We died

Col. 3:1 Raised with Christ

Col. 3:3 Our life is hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:5 (NASB)

5 Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Hebrews 12:1 (NASB) … let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us…

Romans 13:12 (NASB) … let’s rid ourselves of the deeds of darkness…

Ephesians 4:22–23 (NASB)

22 … in reference to your former way of life, you are to rid yourselves of the old self…

23 and that you are to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

Romans 8:13 (NASB)

for if you are living in accord with the flesh, you are going to die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Matthew 5:29–30 (NASB)

29 Now if your right eye is causing you to sin, tear it out and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

30 And if your right hand is causing you to sin, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.

I. PUT TO DEATH The Sensual Sins

Colossians 3:5–11 (NASB)

Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality…

Sexual immorality (fornication) is all manner of unlawful sexual behavior or relationship.

Ephesians 5:3 (NASB) But sexual immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among saints

Ephesians 5:5 (NASB) For this you know with certainty, that no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, which amounts to an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

1 Corinthians 6:18 (NASB) Flee sexual immorality. Every other sin that a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.

1 Thessalonians 4:3–5 (NASB)

3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;

4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,

5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;

1 Thessalonians 4:6–7 (NASB)

6 and that no one violate the rights and take advantage of his brother or sister in the matter, because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you previously and solemnly warned you.

7 For God has not called us for impurity, but in sanctification.

Colossians 3:5–11 (NASB)

Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity,

Impurity is uncleanness and is opposite of purity and holiness.

Impurity includes sodomy, homosexuality, lesbianism, pederasty, bestiality, and all other forms of sexual perversion.

Galatians 5:19 (NASB) Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior,

Romans 1:24 (NASB) Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them.

Colossians 3:5–11 (NASB)

Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion,

Passion is an inordinate affection (ungodly soul ties) , unnatural, unrestrained, excessive, and out of bounds desire and lust.

Passion is wonderful in marriage,

but so is self control.

1 Peter 2:11 (ESV)

Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

Romans 1:26 (NASB)

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature…

1 Thessalonians 4:5 (NASB)

not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;

Colossians 3:5–11 (NASB)

Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

Evil desire – is craving, longing, desire for what is forbidden.

Greed or Coveting is the internal, sinful desire to satisfy ourselves with more, more, more.

In this context greed or covetousness relates to sexual appetites.

Colossians 1:16 (NASB)

for by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.

Idolatry is not just an image-worship. It is an extravagant admiration of the heart.

Idolatry includes anything on which affections are passionately set.

Ephesians 5:5 (NASB)

For this you know with certainty, that no sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, which amounts to an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

1 Corinthians 10:14 (NASB)

Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

Colossians 3:6 (NASB)

6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,

7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.

II. PUT OFF THE SOCIAL SINS

Col. 3:5 Put to death what is earthly in you

Colossians 3:8 (NASB)

But now you also, rid yourselves of all of them: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene speech from your mouth.

Anger is an agitation of the soul, impulse, desire, or any violent emotion.

Wrath (rage) is a quick, sudden outburst, the blaze of emotion which flares up and burns with intensity.

Malice is an ill will, vicious, deliberate intention of doing harm to others.

Slander is a defamation of character.

To slander someone is to injure their reputation.

Obscene speech is a filthy language or abusive, sinful speech.

9 Do not lie to one another, since you stripped off the old self with its evil practices, (Put off)

10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created it—

Colossians 3:6 (NASB)

Do not lie to one another, since you stripped off the old self with its evil practices,

Colossians 3:10 (NASB)

and have put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created it

Romans 6:13 (NASB)

and do not go on presenting the parts of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead, and your body’s parts as instruments of righteousness for God.

Romans 6:19 (NASB)

… just as you presented the parts of your body as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your body’s parts as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctification.

Galatians 5:19–21 (NASB)

19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior,

20 idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions,

Galatians 5:21 (NASB)

21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice (continues tense) such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
