Journey

Biblical images of journeys and portraits of sojourners illustrate the life of faith, trust and dependence that has been an abiding feature of the people of God. This biblical motif captures important aspects of Israel’s earliest origins and disposition toward the world and serves as a basic paradigm for Christian existence. Several motifs make up the archetypal journey. Its essence is physical movement through space, with accompanying change of one’s physical status. To journey is to be uprooted, either temporarily or for a prolonged period. A person on a journey is characterized by a certain detachment from earthly goods and comforts. The journey is an image of transition, with the traveler either headed toward a fixed place (the archetypal quest story) or in flight away from it (sometimes in guilt, sometimes as a victim, as when Joseph’s brothers sell him into slavery and send him on a journey to Egypt). In either case, a journey presupposes both a place that is left and a destination.
