Sermon Recap: It Was Dead When I Bought It

September 3, 2023 • Brian Bowman, Sterling Edwards

Sterling Edwards and Brian Bowman discuss the sermon from 1 John 5:6-12 If you missed the sermon, you can listen to it here: https://valleylifechurch-az.http://subspla.sh/2dy2bcg 1 John 5:6-12 6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.  7 For there are three that testify:  8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.  9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.  10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son.  11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Sterling Edwards and Brian Bowman discuss the sermon from 1 John 5:1-5 If you missed the sermon, you can listen to it here: https://valleylifechurch-az.http://subspla.sh/4f7cshd 1 John 5:1-5 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well.  2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands.  3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,  4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.  5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

Sermon Recap: Let Us Love

Sterling Edwards and Brian Bowman discuss the sermon from 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 If you missed the sermon, you can listen to it here: https://valleylifechurch-az.http://subspla.sh/562qk3y 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good.  18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.  19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.  20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat,  21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk.  22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter! 23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,  24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”  25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”  26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.  28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.  29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.  30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.  31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment.  32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. 33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together.  34 Anyone who is hungry should eat something at home, so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment. And when I come I will give further directions.

Daniel Harvill and Brian Bowman discuss the Kids Takeover sermon from Acts 10: 34-43 If you missed the sermon, you can listen to it here: https://valleylifechurch-az.http://subspla.sh/vby7ddw Acts 10: 34-43 34 Then Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism  35 but accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. 36 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.  37 You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached—  38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. 39 “We are witnesses of everything he did in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a cross,  40 but God raised him from the dead on the third day and caused him to be seen.  41 He was not seen by all the people, but by witnesses whom God had already chosen—by us who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead.  43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

Sterling Edwards and Brian Bowman discuss the sermon from 1 John 3:1-3 If you missed the sermon, you can listen to it here: https://valleylifechurch-az.http://subspla.sh/7yrj4tm 1 John 3:1-3 1 See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.  3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Sterling Edwards and Brian Bowman discuss the sermon from 1 John 4:1-3 If you missed the sermon, you can listen to it here: https://valleylifechurch-az.http://subspla.sh/2mx6q5r 1 John 4:1-3 4 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.  2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,  3 but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

Sermon Recap: Go to Church

June 5, 2023 • Sterling Edwards, Brian Bowman

Sterling Edwards and Brian Bowman discuss the sermon from Haggai 1:1-15 If you missed the sermon, you can listen to it here: https://subsplash.com/valleylifechurch-az/podcasts/mi/+sf6dfjz Haggai 1:1-15 1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest:  2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the Lord.”  3 Then the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet,  4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?  5 Now, therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways.  6 You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. 7“Thus says the Lord of hosts: Consider your ways.  8 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord.  9 You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the Lord of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.  10 Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.  11 And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors.” 12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the Lord their God had sent him. And the people feared the Lord.  13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord’s message, “I am with you, declares the Lord.”  14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the Lord of hosts, their God,  15 on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

Sterling Edwards and Brian Bowman discuss the sermon from 1 John 2:7-11 If you missed the sermon you can listen here: https://subsplash.com/valleylifechurch-az/podcasts/mi/+2ny7kdv 1 John 2:7-11 7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. 10 Whoever love his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling. 11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
