The story of Samson has often baffled theologians, pastors, and parishioners. How can someone, who appears to be solely motivated by appetite, vengeance and sex, be considered part of the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews 11? Our next series will explore the dichotomy that is often experienced in the Christian walk. How can we live authentic spiritual lives and yet still struggle intensely with the “flesh"? We’ll examine the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives, what is the true source of Samson’s strength, and how to live spiritually strong lives in a world that encourages us to only follow our hearts. How does the saying go? “Behind every strong man is a strong woman”? Well, maybe that’s not exactly how it goes, but it for sure works for the beginning of the story with Samson. The spiritual strength of Sampson’s mother is evident at the beginning chapter of his life. Yet in the very next chapter, there enters another woman who enters his story where faith is not her ally, and we learn of an exploitable weakness in Samson that casts a foreshadow of things to come. As if nothing could have been worse than the chapter 14 of Samson’s life, here comes chapter 15 in the book of Judges. More sex, violence, and blood thirsty revenge; and all of this because of the Spirit God coming upon Samson?? Something is off about the notion that Samson is simply God’s errand boy in all of these interactions. However, we believe in the inspiration of Scripture, so if the Bible says God was behind Samson’s shenanigans, then by golly He must be . . . Or. . . maybe . . . Just maybe . . . there’s something we’re just not seeing clearly. If you’ve ever struggled with why the Old Testament is full of bloody destruction, and God seems just find taking credit for it all, you won’t want to miss this next chapter in Samson’s life.
