Jesus is walking in the Temple, and the Jews are all around him and asking how long He is going to keep them in suspense. They want to know if He is the Christ, the Messiah, who would bring in the kingdom of God. They want to know. The figure of speech that He has been using, about sheep and the shepherd and the door, isn’t plain enough. They just want some plain speech. Are you the Messiah?

When John tells his readers that “the whole world would not have room for the books that could be written,” he is not exaggerating. John has been very selective in what he has chosen to present as evidence in favor of his conclusion that Jesus is, the Son of God and the Savior of the world. And in his final words, John testifies that the words of this book are “the gospel truth.” So it is not because there is not enough evidence that we are eternally lost. John has put the evidence before his readers, and he encourages each of us to consider the evidence.
