Love through the Arts - Spoken Word Performance by Shanterra Mitchum & Community Poetry Slam

Modern spoken word can be traced back to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s, the American beat poets of the 1950s, and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Shanterra Mitchum, Program Director of the Center for Teen Empowerment Rochester, will perform works inspired by Dr. King. Additionally, there will be an open platform for community members of all ages to use their artistry and voices to encourage, to heal, and to connect.

April 4, 2024

The United Church of Pittsford, in partnership with the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, hosts a special musical event to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Music was not merely a backdrop but a vital force in the Civil Rights Movement, serving as a beacon of courage and unity. Dr. King's powerful oratory, infused with musicality, continues to resonate today, inspiring us to carry on the fight for justice and equality. This is a unique and moving opportunity to come together in song and remembrance, echoing the spirit of resilience and determination.
