Big Idea: Relationship Goal #1: Be Selfless, Not Selfish

This week in student ministry, we kicked off our Relationship Goals series by focusing on Relationship Goal #1: Be Selfless, Not Selfish. We began by talking about how unhealthy dating relationships can escalate quickly and cause long-term consequences—things like emotional pain, regret, or even broken trust. Students saw how selfish choices can poison relationships, while selfless love builds honor, respect, and joy.

We looked at the story from Proverbs 7, where a young man is led into a dangerous relationship because he isn’t thinking ahead and the other person doesn’t have his best interests at heart. The consequences were serious—he was described as “like an ox going to the slaughter” (Proverbs 7:22–23). Students learned that relationships rooted in selfishness often lead to guilt, regret, and pain, while selfless, God-centered relationships lead to joy, fulfillment, and honor.

We then discussed Romans 12:10 and John 15:12, which show us how God calls us to love others genuinely and sacrificially. Making Jesus the center of a relationship helps us love others with honor, care, and selflessness, even when it’s hard.

Ways you can support your student at home:

1. Ask: What does it look like to be selfless in a relationship?

2. Discuss: Why do selfish choices often lead to regret? How can thinking about the future help guide better decisions now?

3. Model selflessness: Show your student how to honor and respect others through your own actions.

4. Practice together: Pick a small act of selfless love as a family this week—helping someone, listening carefully, or encouraging a friend.
