“The Family Business” -

(Walking With JESUS Teaching Series)

Today we are starting a new series! Who here has ever heard

of Walmart

-

(Walton Family), Nike

-

(Knight Family 84),

Hyundai Motor

-

(Chung Family). Each of these companies,

each of these families, although they are huge and well-

known now, they started oﬀ with a decision and buy-in for

those that were in the family and those who want to be apart

of the business.

Today we are going take a look at a few of the disciples and

how they were called to the gospel and how they were given

whole new occupations and a new way of life while walking

With Jesus.

Welcome to The Family Business!

Matthew 4:18-25 (ESV) 18 While walking by the Sea of

Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and

Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were

fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make

you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and

followed him. 21 And going on from there he saw two other

brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the

boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called

them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and

followed him. 23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in

their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

andhealing every disease and every aﬄiction among the people.24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him

all the sick, those aﬄicted with various diseases and pains, those

oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and

he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee

and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from

beyond the Jordan.

Summary:

-

Here we have JESUS starting his ministry.

-

His first call was to two brothers named Simon (AKA Peter)

and his brother Andrew.

-

Then he calls another set of brothers named James and his

Brother John.

-

Now, each of these brothers were out fishing when JESUS

called them, not for fun, this was business, this was their

livelihood, and this is what they and their families were known

for. This was their family business.

-

JESUS comes to both sets of brothers and says (vs. 19)

“Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

-

The Bible says that each brother immediately drops what

they're doing and James/ John even left their father to follow

JESUS. (JESUS interrupted their lives) Has anybody ever

been interrupted by CHRIST, you're just living life, and he says

naw, go this way (reroute..)

- Then the Bible goes on to say that JESUS began proclaiming

the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every

aﬄiction among the people. (verse 23). Everything!

JESUS here is introducing these fishermen, these brothers, into a

life of proclaiming the gospel and being fishers of men. They

are getting to see the power of GOD first for themselves and

others. They’re getting an introduction into what it means tofollow JESUS and follow the Family Business. Business of

Kingdom of GOD!

What Christ was oﬀering these sets of brothers is essentially

what he’s oﬀering us a change. A widening of the scope.

Their goal was to be good fishermen, so that they can

provide for their family and continue to make the family name

and legacy great amongst fishermen. But Chris was oﬀering

these brothers a widen scope and a deeper legacy that goes

pass the family legacy and goes into the eternal legacy.

Now in order to even get to this introduction these four

men had to do something very important. They had to

make a choice.

-

The had to choice between their current lives and the life

JESUS was oﬀering (Remember this is their way of life,

their livelihood, All they’ve known, their reputation, and

even their family name and legacy we are talking about

here —which are very important).

-

They each made a choice to forever leave the legacy that

their families had built to go on this unknown quest to

follow who they would later know as JESUS the Savior.

How many of You can say you would do the same?

(remember there was no bible as we know it today, scripture

was being written which they would ultimately be a part of,

you couldn’t check JESUS’s IG/ FB or even google him to see

if he was real).

-

They followed JESUS in the unknown. They made a choice.

-

And it’s because of that faith that they were able to change

their world. (I still believe that YAHWEH is all powerful )

The gospel is about taking you out of your current state and

placing you on a new path, with a new Hope, giving you neweyes, New perspective, and a new worldview, and allowing

transformation through the Holy Spirit and the gift of Jesus

Christ through our heavenly father.

When looking at all the disciples, Jesus literally turned these

EX- fishermen, EX-thieves, EX-tax collectors, and these

people who had very little education to scholars and

followers of THE WAY/ THE GOSPEL.

Acts 4:13 (ESV) 13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter

and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common

men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had

been with Jesus.

- Now in this passage Peter and John were telling the good

news to the people in the town square and had just healed this

man, and the priests that were there were very annoyed but

said they could not deny the power of the miracle that just

happened through the healing of this man.

The bible even said that they were astonished because Peter

and Andrew were perceived to be unlearned but spoke with

such boldness and conviction.

They spoke of what they heard back in Matt 4 when they

were called to The Family Business, They healed people

because of what they saw JESUS do and they were bold

because of what they experienced through walking with

JESUS!

-

You see The Family Business is about introducing others to

the lifetime experience of walking with JESUS!

-

No one can ever take the experience of walking with Christ

away from you, this will give us boldness and strength.-

They had a point of contact (JESUS) that would forever

change their Destiny.

Jesus was overturning the systems and hearts of that day.

By:

- Eating and hanging out with sinners like you and me to bring us

into the family.

- Proclaiming truths that made people fill uncomfortable.

- Proclaiming that he was the son of GOD

- Healing those who were sick

- Providing direction to those who were lost.- Even raising

those that were died, both physically and spiritual.

CHRIST is trying to do the same with us today!

Christ is trying to take you from the season you're currently

in into a new season of total transformation

(which brings undeniable victory).

It may be uncomfortable at first, but it is well worth it.

Just like the Disciple we read about We have make a choice!

It’s an ending to a relationship with your past life, and a start

of a new one.

Your latter days (the days in front of you) shall be greater

than your former (the days in behind you) because of this

new connection because of the things his going to show you,

and because the grace that he have given to you.
