Luke 16:19-26

22 “𝐿𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟, 𝐿𝑎𝑧𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑠 𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑑. 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑡𝑜𝑜𝑘 ℎ𝑖𝑚 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑑 ℎ𝑖𝑚 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐴𝑏𝑟𝑎ℎ𝑎𝑚. 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑖𝑐ℎ 𝑚𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑒𝑑. 23 𝐻𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑒𝑎𝑡ℎ 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑔𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑡 𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑛. 𝐻𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑤 𝐴𝑏𝑟𝑎ℎ𝑎𝑚 𝑓𝑎𝑟 𝑎𝑤𝑎𝑦 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝐿𝑎𝑧𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑠 𝑖𝑛 ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑚𝑠. 24 𝐻𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑, ‘𝐹𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟 𝐴𝑏𝑟𝑎ℎ𝑎𝑚, ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑦 𝑜𝑛 𝑚𝑒! 𝑆𝑒𝑛𝑑 𝐿𝑎𝑧𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑒 𝑠𝑜 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 ℎ𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑑𝑖𝑝 ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑖𝑛 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑜𝑙 𝑚𝑦 𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑢𝑒. 25 “𝐵𝑢𝑡 𝐴𝑏𝑟𝑎ℎ𝑎𝑚 𝑠𝑎𝑖𝑑, ‘𝑀𝑦 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑, 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑑? 𝑌𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑎𝑑 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑔𝑜𝑜𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒. 𝐵𝑢𝑡 𝐿𝑎𝑧𝑎𝑟𝑢𝑠 ℎ𝑎𝑑 𝑛𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑏𝑙𝑒𝑚𝑠. 𝑁𝑜𝑤 ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑑 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑠𝑢𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔. 26 𝐴𝑙𝑠𝑜, 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑏𝑖𝑔 𝑝𝑖𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑡𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑢𝑠. 𝑁𝑜 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝 𝑦𝑜𝑢, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑛𝑜 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒.’

In Jesus’ story, Lazarus, the poor man went to heaven when he died. He had nothing to his name while he was alive and was so poor he could only eat the scraps from the rich man’s table yet he went to heaven. God is not looking for someone who has a mansion, a phone, or a car. To God, it's not about how many things we own. Remember that everything that we have is given by God so He is not impressed by any of our cool stuff.

What can we learn from how God loves us when treating people who may not be rich?

- How can we practice the same grace to love other people that God shows us?

Aren’t you glad that God can see beyond our social status? God loves us very much, He wants to make sure everyone has equal access to Him whether rich or poor. Heaven is like a very expensive concert – you need to have a ticket to enter. But you don’t need to be rich to buy that ticket. God loves us so faithfully that He gave us His precious son, Jesus Christ – the only ticket we need to get to Heaven.

𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬

Dear God, thank You for loving us so faithfully that there is nothing that can separate us from Your love. While the world treats money and wealth as important, in Your eyes we are all equal and You love us the same. Thank You for giving us the most precious treasure we have - Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.

𝗗𝗜𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥

Google “the most expensive things in the world” and you'll find some expected items on the list like a yacht, buildings, cars, paintings, and jewelry.

But there are some very unusual items on the list:

A domain name

An art piece depicting a dead shark

A photograph

A piano

A mobile phone

A floating bed

Parking spot

A feather

Aside from the cost that went into making a certain item, the value of something is usually determined by someone who is willing to pay the price for it. A diamond necklace will not sell for thousands of dollars unless someone is willing to pay for it. Those unusual items on the list are not regular items. For example, the feather is not just like any other feather. The story that comes with that specific feather made it very expensive!

The good news for you and me is Someone was willing to pay the price to get us out of our sins - Jesus. The price was His own life - along with the suffering and shame that came with it. In order to save us, Jesus paid that price, dying on the cross for us. That is how much He loves us.
