“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” — Proverbs 9:10

In a world saturated with information, where knowledge is a click away and opinions abound, there is a clarion call for true wisdom that grounds us in our lives and world. I often find my soul stirred by the book of Proverbs—not just as poetic insights or practical tips for daily living, but as holy invitations to live deeply and walk rightly in the fear of the Lord.

At the heart of Proverbs is a truth so simple, yet so profound: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This is not fear in the sense of dread, but a holy reverence—a recognition that God is God and we are not. This reverent awe orients the heart, calibrates the conscience, and sets the life’s compass toward heaven.

Wisdom is different than accumulated knowledge or cleverness in navigating life’s challenges. It is spiritual insight rooted in a relationship with our omniscient God. It begins with humility—a posture that says, “God, I need You. I cannot live rightly apart from You.” Every decision becomes an act of worship, every crossroads a chance to lean not on our own understanding, but to trust in the Lord with all our heart (Proverbs 3:5-6).

One of the most beautiful images in Proverbs is that of Wisdom personified, standing in the streets and calling out to all who will listen: “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?” (Proverbs 1:22). There is urgency in her voice—not condemnation, but compassionate invitation. Wisdom is available to everyone. All that is required is a heart that listens—a life willing to be shaped by God. In these turbulent times, when confusion often masquerades as enlightenment, and compromise is paraded as progress, Jesus’ Kingdom people must lift high the banner of true wisdom lived out through our lives as a beacon of hope.

This summer, we will make our way through the book of Proverbs together. In addition to passages that will be preached in worship on Sunday mornings, I want to invite you to join me in reading a chapter of Proverbs

each day in June, July, and August. How convenient that there are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs,

one for every day of the month. Each day, simply let the day of the month determine which chapter of Proverbs to read.

At its heart, our pursuit of true wisdom is the pursuit of God Himself.
