THE SON IS GIVEN

The Greek word διδωμι (didomi) means “to give or grant.” Various forms of it are found in the following verses to adjust the meaning to “give, deliver, or betray”: Mark 1:14-15; 9:31; 10:33-34; 45; 13:9; 14:10-11; 18; 21; 22-24; 41-42; 15:1; 15; 44-45.

TO THE SANHEDRIN (14:53-72)

TO PILATE & THE PEOPLE (15:1-15)

v1 The Sanhedrin meet and present their case to Pilate.

v2-5 Pilate hears from Jesus and the chief priests.

v6-10 Pilates see how the people respond to Jesus.

v11 The chief priests move the people to choose a murderous insurrectionist over Jesus.

v12-15 Pilate seeks to please the people instead of God and sentences Jesus to be scourged and then crucified.

TO ROMAN SOLDIERS (15:16-32)

v16-20 Roman soldiers followed in the mockery of Jesus as the King of the Jews.

Q: Does your life mock and scorn the idea that you will give account to Jesus? Or, do you just deny Him and move one with your life? How do you respond the Jesus’s claim to be “Messiah” and “the Son of God”?

v21 In Jesus's journey to be crucified, the soldiers enlisted a passerby to bear Jesus's cross.

v22-23 Jesus would not allow His pain or wits to be dulled as He soberly fulfilled His mission of the cross.

v24, 29 They crucified Jesus in a way that brings to light Psalm 22, with direct allusions to verses 1, 7, and 18.

v25-28 They crucified Jesus among transgressors in a way that fulfilled Isaiah 52:13-53:12 and identified Jesus as the “Suffering Servant.”

v29-32 They scoffed and "blasphemed" Jesus on the cross.

TO GOD'S WRATH (15:33-36)

Q: Do you think Jesus teaches that God’s love is void of holiness and justice? Do you see how the cross says differently than that? Why is this good news?

TO DEATH (15:37)

TO RECONCILE (15:38-39)

First, we see Jesus’s humanity, divinity, and sonship expressed in how He dies and in the centurion’s response to it.

Second, we see the good news of Jesus’s death that reconciles sinners from all nations to God, symbolized by the tearing of the veil.

Q: How are you responding to Jesus and His death on the cross? How should you?

CONCLUSION

On your own, meditate on: Psalm 22, Psalm 69, and Isaiah 52:13-53:12.

SERMON IN A SENTENCE: Jesus is the Son of God who gave Himself to bear the wrath of God for the condemned of God by the grace of God to the glory of God, so repent and believe this good news.
