Day 2. 12/18—You Are Somebody…

Luke 1:46-55
46 Mary responded,
“Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.
47 How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!
48 For he took notice of his lowly servant girl,
and from now on all generations will call me blessed.
49 For the Mighty One is holy,
and he has done great things for me.
50 He shows mercy from generation to generation
to all who fear him.
51 His mighty arm has done tremendous things!
He has scattered the proud and haughty ones.
52 He has brought down princes from their thrones
and exalted the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away with empty hands.
54 He has helped his servant Israel
and remembered to be merciful.
55 For he made this promise to our ancestors,
to Abraham and his children forever.”

Isn’t it simply amazing that this young teen was able to put into words such a beautiful yet profound worship song. If we look closely at the phrasing, some may want to assert that by stating that “all generations will call me blessed” she was getting a little full of herself. I think quite the contrary and the reason I bring it up is that many times overweight individuals have a mistaken concept of humility.

For many of us who have been pushed into staying at home whether because we are in the “at risk” population for Covid or in an area of the country where there are current “shelter in place” orders, can begin to feel alone, insignificant, and forgotten. In this atmosphere, food just seems to call out my name. Overeating is the way that many of us comfort ourselves when we are anxious and worried.

One of the reasons people overeat and misuse food is that they allow themselves to be treated like doormats and mistakenly think that this is godly. When I was taken advantage of and not respected, I would often turn to food for comfort because taking it in always left me feeling worthless and without value. This is not humility. Humility is not be mistaken with being a door mat. Being humble is not denying God’s blessings upon us and ignoring other peoples complements, but instead humility is really about acknowledging God’s blessing. We should accept the gifts he has given us and use his blessings to bring about his glory.

Whether we are locked down or not, let’s realize that you are somebody. Just this realization can relieve enough stress in our life can move us forward. Remember, God has taken notice of you. He knows your name. And he loves you just as much as he loved Mary, the mother of Jesus.
