TRUE DISCIPLESHIP

Sunday (7/23), gather with your church family as we turn our attention to Matthew 10:34-42, in which Jesus concludes His instructions for those twelve disciples whom He had just commissioned, preparing them for the opposition, obstacles, and persecution they would face as He sent them out to be His ambassadors in a hostile world.

He finished by detailing what makes someone a true disciple. Why is this important? Because only those who know the purpose of Christ’s coming, death, burial, and resurrection would be able to withstand the onslaught of erroneous beliefs that would challenge the divinity of Christ or His humanity. Some would claim that Jesus was a created being named Michael the

Archangel until His birth. Others would argue that Jesus did not become the Messiah until His baptism when “The Christ Spirit” would come upon Him and remain until the crucifixion when the Spirit would be lifted off of Him. And still, others would claim that salvation is found in the rituals and traditions of a religious institution rather than faith in HIs name.

Therefore, in light of what was at stake, Jesus wanted His disciples to know the purpose of His coming, the price they would pay to follow Him, and the rich reward that awaited those who endured. And if they would establish themselves in Him, they would be able to discern the truth from a lie and be a useful instrument in His hands to open the eyes of those who are blind.

The wisdom of Jesus’ admonition, a warning with instruction, proved beneficial for those disciples who answered the call and became the men who turned the world upside down and changed it forever.
