ONE MAN’S RIGHTEOUS ACT

Sunday (4/16), gather with your church family as we conclude our two-part series in the book of Romans (5:12-21). Last Sunday, we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus Christ and rejoiced in the benefits graciously provided to those who have placed their faith in His sacrifice (5:1-11).

First, Paul told the Romans that they have peace with God because they have been justified from their sins (5:1). This declaration is more than a not guilty verdict or a person let go because there wasn’t sufficient evidence for a conviction.

Instead, Jesus’ resurrection was the sign that God had accepted His death as payment for the sins of mankind. Therefore, those who turn from their sins and trust Him are declared innocent. “Jesus, who was delivered up because of our offenses and was raised because of our justification” (Ro 4:25).

Second, Paul told them that due to their righteous standing before God, they would never face or have to fear His wrath, which would be poured out in fullness upon those who reject Jesus as their Savior (5:10).

Finally, the church at Rome would be marked with joy, for they had been made one with God and would enjoy a close intimate relationship with Him, including the promise that God would never leave nor forsake them all the days of their lives upon the earth (5:11).

Paul then laid out the case of why and how Jesus accomplished this through His death, burial, and resurrection (5:12-21). Finally, he described how sin entered the world and affected everyone, starting with Adam and Eve and continuing through everyone born.

Paul concluded the chapter by comparing and contrasting Adam and Jesus Christ. Both men were born perfect, without one spiritual defect. Yet, Adam sinned and brought condemnation upon His offspring. Jesus faced every temptation that Adam faced but without sin. Therefore, He was able to go to the cross and be the spotless lamb of God through whom men and women who trusted Him for the forgiveness of sins would be declared justified and given the promise of everlasting life.
