BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING

Sunday (3/24), gather with your church family as we turn our attention to John’s account of Palm Sunday (John 12:12-19). It was a day unlike any other. The moment that Jesus entered Jerusalem to the praise of the multitude. And a few days before, He would be lifted from the earth on a Roman cross to give His life as a ransom.

On the surface, that day looked like a random event. Jesus, who had spent the night before in Bethany, had taken the short trip to Jerusalem like several million others to gather for the Feast of Passover.

As He rode on the back of a young colt, the crowd spontaneously picked up Palm branches and placed them in His path as they sang one of the Psalms. This would be the peak of His public ministry, and even though it was only for a moment, it would be etched in the memory of everyone who was there.

Unbeknownst to the crowd, they were all following a script that Daniel, David, and Zechariah had recorded in the Scriptures hundreds of years before. Nothing was by coincidence or chance but determined according to God’s will long before the foundation of the world.

Each of the four Gospels contains the Palm Sunday narrative so that the following generations would know what, when, where, and why Jesus had come from Heaven. They are a record of God’s faithfulness and proof that only He can predict the future as if it had already occurred.

Many years later, John, looking back on all that had transpired, gave the reason for writing about Jesus’ birth, ministry, trials, death, burial, and resurrection. He wrote, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).

The multitude in Jesus’ day were waiting for the arrival of a Messiah, and most of them missed it due to their obsession with looking for a political Savior. Today, we await His second return, and may the Lord protect us from making the same mistake.
