Saul’s interaction with a medium and the dead is one of the most interesting interactions in Hebrew scripture. His motivations are very human: feeling alone, desperate, and afraid. And yet, did he not experience peace from the dead? Instead, he left the experience feeling more dread, more fear, and more chaos in his inner-life. How are we to relate to the dead and the spiritual realm in seasons of fear and loneliness?
