It would be a big mistake for a football player who begins playing for a new team to wear his old jersey from
his former team during a game. The old jersey no longer represents the player accurately. He must wear the
uniform that represents the team that he plays for today. In the same way, when we become followers of
Christ, we are no longer identified with our old, sinful life. We are new creations, and our new life produces
godly traits and attributes that identify us with Christ. For Paul, love is the supreme attribute of a Christian.
Love is the thing that brings people together and makes their differences compatible. Love not only binds and
unites all godly attributes, but love is also the quality that binds the members of the Body of Christ together in
unity and maturity.

With so many denominations, it can seem like Unity in Doctrine is more of an ideal than an actual possibility. This leads many people to wonder if it might be better for Christians to take their doctrine a little less seriously and focus more on simply loving each other. Though this is an understandable suggestion, it does not take into account how connected our behaviors are to our beliefs. The Bible actually tells us that it is only by taking our doctrine more seriously, that we will be able to become people who are less likely to fight with each other about it.
