Summary: The four brothers of Goliath return to avenge Goliath’s death. The older David no longer possesses the stamina for combat; yet there are many who are able to take his place. The people of God protect David and defeat the enemy. Application: This passage reminds us of the need to disciple. We are able to fight now, but who are we bringing up behind us to continue the fight? How this passage could point to Christ: David is told not to fight as they must protect the “Light of Israel”. This seems to be a reference beyond David to the Son of David who would one day call himself “The Light of the World”. As believers, we must ensure that we do not allow our liberties to ever darken the Light. Big Idea: How we prepare the next generation and service this one matters.

Summary: Israel is in the midst of a three year famine resulting from sin committed by the previous king, Saul. David seeks to make restitution which requires the killing of seven men in King Saul’s family. David then seeks to comfort Saul’s grieving concubine. Application: This passage reminds Christians of the consequences of sin and demonstrates the fervor required to make things right once again. How this passage could point to Christ: Though Mephibosheth was in line to die, he was spared because of a covenant of grace made by the king. We, like Mephibosheth, deserved to perish but are saved through a gracious covenant made by King Jesus. Big Idea: How we respond to life’s storms matter.
