Psalm 6:5 (NKJV)
5 For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks?

PRAYER: Father in Heaven, we thank You for another gift of life, today. Before we look at this text briefly, we invite Your presence in our midst, guide and bless us in the study, we pray. We thank You, and we come in Christ’s most powerful Name, Amen.

INTRODUCTION
• In Psalm 6:5; the word “Grave”; Heb. sheol, also used in Genesis 37:35 (NKJV)
• This verse constitutes evidence against the doctrine of a conscious intermediate state between death and the resurrection (Ps. 88:10; 146:4; Isa. 38:18).
• Popular theology represents the righteous dead as in heaven, entered into bliss and praising God with an immortal tongue (GC, 546.1); But that’s not true.

SHEOL {Baker encyclopedia of the Bible}
• Hebrew term of uncertain etymology. In ordinary usage it means ravine, chasm, underworld, or world of the dead. In the OT it is the place where the dead have their abode, a hollow space underneath the earth where the dead are gathered in. Synonyms for Sheol are pit, death, and destruction (Abaddon). Sheol is a place of shadows and utter silence. Here all existence is in suspense, yet it is not a nonplace like utopia, but rather a place where life is no more. It is described as the Land of Forgetfulness. Those who dwell there cannot praise God (Ps 88:10–12). In Revelation it is called the “bottomless pit” presided over by Abaddon, the prince of the pit (Rev. 9:11).

Psalm 6:5 (NKJV)
For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give You thanks?

We are to praise and glorify God while on earth; here and now.
• The purpose for which we were created cannot be accomplished in the grave.
• David declares that man is not conscious in death. “His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts perish.” Psalm 146:4.
• Solomon bears the same testimony: Read Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6, 10.

BIBLICAL SUPPORT:

Psalm 30:9 (NKJV)
“What profit is there in my blood, When I go down to the pit? Will the dust praise You? Will it declare Your truth?

Psalm 88:10–12 (NKJV)
10 Will You work wonders for the dead? Shall the dead arise and praise You? Selah

11 Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction?

12 Shall Your wonders be known in the dark? And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

Psalm 115:17 (NKJV)
The dead do not praise the LORD, Nor any who go down into silence.

Psalm 118:17 (NKJV)
I shall not die, but live, And declare the works of the LORD.

Isaiah 38:18 (NKJV)
For Sheol cannot thank You, Death cannot praise You; Those who go down to the pit cannot hope for Your truth.

Psalm 146:4 (NKJV)
His spirit departs, he returns to his earth; In that very day his plans perish.

Ecclesiastes 9:5,6,10 (NKJV)
5 For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten.

6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; Nevermore will they have a share In anything done under the sun.

10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.

WHAT MUST I DO?

From The Inspired Pen

When, in answer to his prayer, Hezekiah’s life was prolonged fifteen years, the grateful king rendered to God a tribute of praise for His great mercy. In this song he tells the reason why he thus rejoices: “The grave cannot praise Thee, death cannot celebrate Thee: they that go down into the pit cannot hope for Thy truth. The living, the living, he shall praise Thee, as I do this day.” Isaiah 38:18, 19. (Ellen G. White, The Great Controversy; p. 546)

We need to offer praise and thanksgiving to God, not only in the congregation, but in the home life. Let the voices of His heritage be heard recounting the works of the Lord. Speak of His goodness, tell of His power.… (Ellen G. White, In Heavenly Places; p. 96.1)

Hebrews 13:15 (NKJV)
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

OUR RESPONSES!

SDA Hymn: # 001 – Praise to the Lord

1
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near;
Join ye in glad adoration!

CLOSING PRAYER

Oh Lord! heal my body, and heal my soul, that I may be rendered capable of praising, loving and serving Thee here below. Let me be like Jesus today, who was committed to Your work, saying: “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work” [John 9:4 (NKJV)]. Help me to “continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of my lips, giving thanks to Your name”. I humbly commit myself to You today. Thank You Father, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
