Knowing God the Encourager

September 9, 2018 • Dr. Danny Lovett

A change of leadership always requires adjustments. The children of Israel experienced this with King Uzziah in Isiaiah 6, as we studied a few weeks ago. They also experienced it when Moses died. The book of Joshua begins with this comment. "Moses, my servant has died..." (Joshua 1:2). Joshua is waiting, he is available which makes Him usable. All those years of Joshua’s service and training under Moses had prepared Joshua for leadership of an entire nation. Because Joshua was prepared, teachable, and available and eager to know and serve God, he was used to lead the nation of Israel into the Promised Land. The Lord may have a great task or work for us down the road too. Our responsibility is to spiritually prepare ourselves by getting to know God in an intimate way, so that when God appoints us for a specific role, we are ready. This Sunday we will look at how God encouraged Joshua before he took leadership over the nation Israel. This same encouragement is available to us!

Knowing the God of Comfort

Even though, we're God’s children, we still have problems. Second Timothy 2:3 says for us to "endure hardness as good soldiers of Jesus Christ." If you lose your job, if you lose your health, if the forces of evil seem to be attacking you, if the economy is not working in your favor, and you're not happy with the election results, or if your friends turn away and everything is going wrong, you may want to just be disappointed in God. You may want to resent the Lord. I may have doubts and questions about what God's doing. I may not like how he's running the world, but... I must continue to do one thing. I must continue to rejoice in the Lord. He is our strength, He is our rock, He is our salvation (Psalm.27:1). This Sunday, the title of the message is Knowing the God of Comfort. We will take a look at how we can have comfort in uncomfortable times.

Knowing the God who is our Judge and Father

Far too often when people discuss God, they ignore His justice and judgement and only emphasize His love. This is dangerous, for God’s nature is both loving and just. In fact, God’s justice and judgement are based on His love. It is God’s love for all who truly believe in and trust Him that arouses His righteous judgement to strike out against those who mistreat His followers. Furthermore, God requires that His holy name be honored. It's so important that this is included as one of the Ten Commandments. God will execute vengeance on all who reject, neglect, and curse His Holy Name. This Sunday's message is Knowing The God Who is Our Judge and Father.
